Overcoming Failure and Mistakes

I got called out.

I confessed to my Growth Mindset Course delegates that I was crap at DIY. A delegate rightly said, ‘but that’s a limiting belief’. He was right.

We all have blind spots don’t we?

If I said we’ve even withdrawn our offer on a house because there was too much DIY, but it was in the perfect location, would you judge me?

The other weekend I decided to up-cycle our bedroom furniture. After the first day I announced at the dinner table that I’d learnt more about what not to do, next time ??.

I work primarily with people in the professional services industries. In particular lawyers. One of the limiting beliefs that repeatedly comes up is the fear of mistakes or getting something wrong.

This then causes procrastination, stagnation, overwhelm, perfectionism and long hours because they’re stuck and afraid of screwing up.

The thing is about limiting beliefs connected with childhood, is that they can cause real stress if not corrected.

I have dealt with many memories where the client got something wrong as a child often at school or was ‘naughty’ which caused humiliation and shame. The sad thing is that this unconscious program, then continues to drive our behaviour as adults. The other thing with limiting beliefs is that we believe our own rhetoric, don’t we?

I’ve told myself for decades that I can’t do DIY. It’s why we’ve always lived in brand-new houses.

There are two ways to overcome pesky limiting beliefs:

1. Cheat change and Haven the source childhood memory,?see my 2 minute havening video?on how you can DIY.

2. JFDI…or give something a try. Be brave. Don your big pants.

Things reached a crescendo on the Sunday morning, when it was time to apply the gold leaf. I was getting my knickers in a twist over whether I should apply the lacquer first or afterwards.

I left the DIY Queen a message aka my sister and scoured countless blogs and YouTube videos. It’s amazing what help is available when you ask or go looking for it.

The before pic is above and here's some after pics:

The sparkles on the mirror are covering up a mis-take. I didn’t apply the masking tape properly, so the paint leaked ??.

And that’s the point of the growth mindset; we learn and grow from marginal gains and improve as we go along as opposed to trying to be perfect from the get go.

We can learn most skills if we choose given the right attitude and motivation, can’t we?

I’m not about to plumb in a new bathroom but I have spotted lots of things that could use a bit of gold leaf ??.

Personal Reflection:

  1. When, where and with whom are you afraid of failure or mis-takes?
  2. What are you avoiding doing / procrastinating over because you're afraid it won't be perfect?
  3. What is the impact of this?
  4. What's the very first step which would move you closer to what you desire?

?Wishing you all the very best.
