Overcoming Depression
The last two days have brought up a lot of talk about mental health. While most of you know me as an advocate, I feel like more than ever it is important to share our stories.
Here is mine.
13 years ago, I was in a long term relationship. My girlfriend at the time was scheduled to go to Israel for 3 months.
Days before she left, she broke up with me.
Like most relationships, her friends had become mine.
While still reeling from the breakup, I decided to travel from my home in NJ to Brooklyn to meet up with some friends.
As I was driving on the Verazano Bridge, my brakes gave out. I quickly smashed into 2 cars in front of me. All I remember was getting out of my car and going to check on the other drivers, when I felt a pinch in my neck.
I was taken to the hospital where I spent 3 days. At the time, my parents were away on vacation and I was home with my pets.
Unable to move without severe pain and still emotionally devastated I slid into a deep depression.
Then all of a sudden and completely out of the blue, I hear a knock on my door. My friend, Monica had driven an hour to keep me company. I hadn't reached out to her but somehow she had picked the time, I needed a friend the most.
This situation was one of the reasons I eventually wound up in California, where I met my best friend and future wife, the first week.
The thing about depression is, it affects us all differently. We all need a helping hand and support. We all need someone to talk to.
Monica provided me a friend and an ear when I needed it most and helping others, is how I pay that kindness forward.
The reality of life, is we never know where it will take us and how one event can lead to another.
Had I not overcome that depression, had I not forced myself to get out of bed every morning, I would never have had the privilege to meet the love of my life.
Don't be afraid to ask for help. There is always someone that will listen.
