Overcoming Career Stagnation for Military Women

Eight years ago, I felt STUCK in my career but truly I felt stuck in my LIFE as wife and mom.

I didn’t know if getting out of the military MEANT not having a “real” career or what my life would even look like in the civilian workforce.

Yes pivoting my career felt scary but what was even SCARIER was feeling stuck and not doing anything about it.

I was stuck in choice anxiety.

If there’s one thing I could share with women feeling this way is this…

You have to DECIDE, PLAN and TAKE ACTION regardless of how scary pivoting in your career can be.

For some of you it could mean…

  • new occupation in the military
  • starting over in different field
  • starting a business

If you’re like, "I'm already set in my career and happy with where I am," that’s fantastic!

However, even if you’re content, it’s essential to periodically reflect on whether there are areas in your life where you might be stuck.

Today, I want to explore three common reasons why we often find ourselves in a rut, whether in our careers or other aspects of life.

Understanding these reasons can help you take action and see results.

1. Lack of Direction

One primary reason for feeling stuck is a lack of direction. This often stems from not having enough information about the possibilities available to us. In the military, we sometimes get so focused on our current roles that we miss out on exploring other opportunities. Whether it’s a new position, a different career path, or further education, there’s a wealth of options out there. Taking the time to research and understand these possibilities is crucial. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start small. Dedicate a few minutes each week to explore what’s out there and how it aligns with your goals.

2. Indecision

Indecision is another significant barrier. Many of us struggle with making decisions, especially when faced with numerous options. This can lead to “choice anxiety,” where we become so anxious about making the wrong choice that we end up making no decision at all. I’ve experienced this firsthand. Even when I decided to leave the military, I couldn’t pinpoint a date. It’s important to recognize this pattern and take steps to overcome it. Break down decisions into smaller, manageable parts and focus on making one choice at a time. Remember, taking action, even imperfectly, is better than staying stagnant.

3. Disagreement with Others

The third reason is disagreement with others, particularly when it comes to significant life changes like career transitions. If you’re married or have a family, their concerns and objections can weigh heavily on your decisions. Often, this happens because you’re not entirely sold on your new path yourself. To overcome this, communicate clearly and confidently about your vision and plans. Show your loved ones why this change is important to you and how it will benefit your family in the long run. Building mutual understanding and support is key to moving forward.

It’s crucial to identify where you might be stuck and take steps to address it and this platform is a great place to begin! Whether it’s gathering more information, making decisive plans, or building support with your loved ones, each of these areas requires intentional action.
