Introduction:

Several telltale signs suggest an employee has hit a career plateau. These could range from a lack of challenges at work, reduced learning opportunities, absence of excitement or motivation, or feeling stuck in the same position for an extended period.


I worked very hard for over 25 years in an industry where I rapidly rose from management trainee to the board within 15 years. I also held 12 different positions/titles within those 25 years. In my 23rd year in the industry, I? realised that the promised succession plan for me to move to the next higher role the following year would no longer be visible.? No official explanation was given outside the usual comment that I was too young for the next position, leaving me deeply betrayed. I lost confidence and trust in a system that has encouraged meritocracy and rewarded good performance over the years. Another revised succession plan that could place me in a far more significant role within five years was not enough to reverse my feeling of betrayal. I saw it as the beginning of a five-year career plateau and a devastating development.? I eventually adjusted after deep reflection, knowing that I could overcome the challenges by grace through strategic repositioning of myself and my career. Education has been a great passion for me for decades, and I had plans to retire into it. A year preceding the betrayal, I accepted the invitation from a Higher Education Institution, which required an adjunct Faculty on a part-time basis, requiring about 12 hours spread over three months.? I eventually took early retirement with reasonable entitlements. After 25 years in the corporate world, I crossed over to a higher education institution to start another career aligned with my post-retirement passion.?


Experiencing a career plateau can be frustrating and demotivating, but it's important to remember that it's common in professional journeys. Overcoming a career plateau requires proactive measures and a strategic approach to reignite growth and progression. From my experience and perspectives, let us discuss strategies to help individuals overcome a career plateau and continue advancing.

Reflect on your current situation, identifying the reasons for your career plateau. With this understanding, set new goals that challenge and excite you, aligning with your long-term vision. 2. Continuous Learning and Skill Development:

To overcome a career plateau, investing in continuous learning and skill development is crucial. Identify the skills and knowledge in demand within your industry and align them with your goals. Pursue relevant training programs, certifications, or higher education courses to acquire new skills or enhance existing ones. I had to pursue a doctorate to become more relevant in a new career in higher education. Additionally, seek opportunities for professional development through workshops, conferences, or webinars to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and advancements in your field.


3. Seek Mentors and Expand Your Network:

Engage with seasoned professionals who can provide guidance, support, and advice. Seek mentors within your organisation or industry who can share their experiences and help you navigate your career plateau. Expand your professional network by attending industry events, joining relevant associations or groups, and actively connecting with like-minded individuals. Networking can lead to new opportunities, insights, and potential career advancements.


4. Embrace New Challenges and Seek Stretch Assignments:

Step out of your comfort zone and seek new challenges to break free from a career plateau—volunteer for assignments or projects that push your boundaries and allow you to acquire valuable skills and experiences. Seek opportunities to take on additional responsibilities or lead cross-functional initiatives. By embracing these stretch assignments, you demonstrate ambition, a willingness to learn, and the ability to handle greater responsibilities.


5. Evaluate and Adjust Job Satisfaction:

Consider if your current job aligns with your long-term goals and aspirations. Assess whether there are opportunities for growth within your organisation or if it may be necessary to seek new opportunities elsewhere. Reflect on work-life balance, work culture, values alignment, and overall job satisfaction. Sometimes, a career plateau may signal a necessary change in career direction.


6. Develop a Personal Brand and Market Yourself:

Building a solid personal brand and effectively marketing yourself can help break a career plateau. Showcase your achievements, skills, and expertise through platforms such as a well-crafted resume, an up-to-date LinkedIn profile, or a professional portfolio. Becoming known within your industry increases your chances of attracting new opportunities and furthering your career progression.
