Overcoming A "Bouncy"? Recent Career Path

Overcoming A "Bouncy" Recent Career Path

Is your job search affected by a "bouncy" recent career?

Bouncy recent career paths often slow your job search, causing you to fail to get interviews for jobs when you're qualified.?Even a just a couple shorter-term positions?can also diminish the number of times you advance in the hiring process, and cause you to lose final offers to others.

This can also cause problems for job seekers who worked on projects, were project based, worked on contract or consulting basis. Most employers still look at this as a "bouncy career path", even when your contracts/projects ended when you successfully completed the project (If you were an above average performer, why didn't the company find other projects for you?).

Many job seekers try to overcome a bouncy career by telling employers "it wasn't my fault", describing that they were hit by layoffs, that your company was acquired, or went out of business.

But when shorter-term position occur more than once in the past few years, employers are naturally skeptical about your responses, asking: Were you laid off because you were an average or under performer? Were you affected by a company sale because you weren't as strong as the acquiring company employees? If you were just unlucky and it happend more than once, would your bad luck negatively impact my team/department/company's performance?

Here are a few ways to overcome a "bouncy" career path:

  1. You Present Additional Risk - So Do More Than Other Candidates To Show You'll Do More On The Job:?Get better employer information than job descriptions, company websites/financials/LinkedIn pages or Google research. Publicly available information is almost never describes current employer problems, doesn't give you any advantage over your competition, and causes you to brand yourself as the wrong fit.
  2. Prove You Weren't An Under Or Average Performer:?Overwhelm employers with the impact you've delivered to past employers. Show that your past employers were crazy to let you go.
  3. Stop Applying Online:?Applicant Tracking Systems are commonly used to screen out candidates who show shorter-term jobs. HR reps and recruiters who pre-screen resumes typically screen out job seekers with "bouncy" resumes, instead choosing candidates that appear to have a more stable track record. When you apply online, through company websites or LinkedIn, you're asking to be screened out.
