Overcoming The Blank Page Syndrome

Overcoming The Blank Page Syndrome

Poor writing skills are killing your growth!

Isn’t it funny how a blank page can send shivers down the spine of the most talkative among us? Yes, that daunting white screen on your computer isn’t just your average villain in horror movies—it’s a real challenge for many articulate folks in our office too!

Remember the jittery feeling during exams? That’s the ‘Test Syndrome’—that moment when you realize everything depends on what you scribble down. It turns out, this fear isn’t just for students; even seasoned professionals get the jitters when faced with the need to jot down their thoughts.

The root of this issue often lies in our reading habits. Or, should I say, the lack thereof? While skimming subtitles on Netflix might feel like reading, it’s a bit like snacking instead of enjoying a full meal—it doesn’t quite nourish your writing skills. Don’t get me wrong, catching up on your favourite series is great, but it won’t help you pen down those memos.

Then there’s the case of old-school letter writing, practically a lost art. Long-distance calls nowadays are a breeze, but they've replaced the thoughtful, deliberate practice of letter crafting. It’s a bit sad to think that few under 40 today know the joy of receiving a handwritten letter. ?????Sure, it was more work, but it was also a great way to sharpen those writing tools without even noticing!

And let’s not forget the big one—fear of spelling mistakes. It can be embarrassing to get caught with a typo, especially when everyone else seems to have spellcheck on tap. In the old days, you’d flick through a word book; today, Google saves the day, though I’d argue it’s making us a tad lazy. ??

Here’s a personal tip: When you need to write something, whether it’s a memo or an email, imagine you’re just chatting with one of your favourite colleagues. Picture the friendly faces you’d usually talk to by the coffee machine. This mental trick can make your writing sound more natural and less like a robot. ??

And remember, writing informally doesn’t mean tossing grammar out the window. It’s about finding a friendly tone while still being respectful and clear. Think of it as talking through your keyboard—relaxed but professional.

So, let’s try to embrace writing a little more. It’s not just about putting words on a page; it’s about connecting, expressing, and even advancing in our careers. Let's not let those blank pages win; start writing and see where it takes you! ???
