Overcoming Barriers to Bible Access

Despite the widespread assumption that Bibles are easily accessible in the United States, a significant number of individuals and households still lack access to a physical copy. Many low-income families, people experiencing homelessness, and individuals in prison or rehab facilities often do not have the resources to purchase or acquire a Bible. While digital copies are available, this presumes access to technology and stable internet connections, which are not a given for everyone.

The lack of Bible availability goes beyond mere access. Studies show that fewer people own or read Bibles in America than in previous generations. With the rise of secular media and the decline in church attendance, many people, especially younger generations, do not have regular exposure to biblical teachings. As a result, even in a nation with a high availability of books and religious materials, there is an apparent "Bible famine" where fewer Americans engage with Scripture. This scarcity in exposure to Bibles contributes to a decrease in biblical literacy, leaving many unaware of the foundational teachings and values within the Christian faith.
One ministry, EEM, is positioned to meet the need for God’s Word in?35+ nations and in 25+ language. I invited Dirk Smith Smith, Vice President with EEM Ministry , the the Unconventional Ministry Podcast to explains.
Here is what you will learn:

EEM’s mission is to give native “heart language” Bible translations to the nations of Eastern Europe and beyond by distributing Bibles and Bible-based materials to individuals, churches, public schools, orphanages, youth camps, hospitals, prisons and rehabilitation institutions. The value of these “heart language” translations resides in the reality that “God speaks our language.”?
"For the price of a to-go coffee or latte, someone can change the life of another by gifting them with God’s Word,” shares EEM Vice President Dirk Smith. “Just think about what giving up a month of lattes would do! That small sacrifice could impact 30 people for all of eternity.”
“When someone reads the Bible for the first time in their language, they realize just how much the God of the universe loves them,” continues Smith. “This is how God’s Word transforms us.”?

American Bible Society defines Bible users as people “who use the Bible at least 3–4 times each year on their own, outside of a church setting”—a low standard.
Several ministries primarily focus on Bible distribution, aiming to increase accessibility to the Bible worldwide. Some of the most prominent ones include:
1. American Bible Society – Distributes Bibles across the U.S. and internationally with a focus on under served populations.
2. Bible League International – Provides Bibles and training in over 50 countries, often targeting areas with limited Christian resources.
3. Gideons International – Known for distributing Bibles in hotels, schools, and other public places worldwide.
4. Eastern European Mission (EEM) – Focuses on Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, distributing Bibles in various languages.
5. Biblica (International Bible Society) – Known for Bible translation and distribution, with a particular focus on areas where biblical resources are scarce.
6. Wycliffe Bible Translators USA – Primarily a translation ministry, but they also focus on making Bibles accessible in many languages.
7. Open Doors International – Supports persecuted Christians, often providing Bibles in hostile regions where Christianity is restricted.
8. The Voice of the Martyrs – Delivers Bibles to regions where Christians are persecuted or have limited access to Scripture.
These ministries are committed to bridging the gap in Bible access, particularly in areas where resources are limited or religious freedom is restricted. Many partner with local churches and communities to ensure Bibles reach the hands of those most in need.
