Ageism is a problem that exists on both sides of the recruitment equation. Often people subconsciously accept the perceived stereotypes as their truth and assume the position. They are then rejected which reinforces the story they have told themselves about how people will perceive them because they are older.
My top five tips are
1. Be open to taking advice
2. Step out of your comfort zone and be prepared to do things differently - A lot will have changed since you last looked for work
3. Update your tools and your employability skills - Job searching is like the sea, ever-changing
4. Show up as yourself and not your age -If you believe that you are too old and that you will be discriminated against - It is true and you will
5. Whatever the role you apply for, inhabit the scope of the role - No one wants to know what you did last summer or 20 years ago unless it is explicitly relevant to the role you are applying for.
I have at least another five, but If I don't stop writing it will be an article.
D.M me if you require assistance. I share lots of articles on the company page that might prove helpful. https://www.dhirubhai.net/company/rise-empowerment/ Kind regards Patricia McLeod
