Overcome is not the most difficult word in the English language.

Overcome is not the most difficult word in the English language. Overcoming obstacles is routine for commercial real estate agents. We do that daily, fielding whatever comes our way like a shortstop in a baseball game.

The most difficult word is contemplation. Why? Because contemplation hold us right where we are regardless of how necessary it may be to make the changes we need to obtain better results. People routinely get stuck, and they stay stuck thinking about making important behavior changes.

The forces that impel change is our daily habits that provide us comfort - the status quo – and keep us in our comfort zone. We all resist change out of the fear that it may be difficult. Why? Because we believe that we are required to make big, sweeping changes or a dramatic overhaul. The real truth is that small changes, applied consistently yield great results. The key to success lies in our ability to make the small behavior changes, which carried out over time produce dramatic results.

Here are two examples: Imagine that your daily ritual each morning is to commit to connecting with two commercial property owners. This small change in behavior would produce no fewer than 480 owner conversations per year and more likely, including callbacks, well over 600 conversations. How could anyone fail with this one simple change in behavior?

Alternatively, if an agent showed up every Monday with just five new prospective listings targeted, with this simple behavior change they would be targeting 200 – 250 listings per year. Again, how could you fail? Neither of these are sweeping or dramatic changes.

In these two strategies lies an important lesson, and a more important question. What are a few seemingly small behavior shifts that you might need to make? And even more importantly, what is it that is holding you back?

The answer is the most difficult word in the human language, contemplation. How many of your plans and strategies are living on ‘Someday I’ll”? The harsh reality is that the contemplation stage about making vital changes in our behaviors can last for years, or even decades.

There are two things that cause people to finally break out of the contemplation stage of change. One is a crisis, which is never good, and often fails to lead to lasting change. The other is a trusted advisor who will guide us to making lasting changes that serve us for the long haul. Coaches are trusted advisors, and many agents have contemplated using a coach to take their business to the next level, but they remain stuck thinking about it.

Contemplation serves us poorly, only consistent action and perseverance produces real results and helps us overcome behaviors that do not serve us, and that leads to ultimate triumph.
