Overcome Fear by Connecting to the Power Within

As the host of the Natural Healing Show for UK Health Radio, I am constantly besieged by experts wanting to share their wisdom with the world.

Recently I have been contacted by numerous authors, psychologists and various other kinds of counselors wanting to talk about how to overcome fear.

There is no doubt that during the age of coronavirus anxiety has become pandemic in our society.

As I wrote about in my blog “Coping with Anxiety and Depression During the Coronavirus Pandemic,” over one-third of all Americans are currently reporting clinical levels of anxiety and depression.

As the author of not just one but two books about how to heal depression naturally and another book of breathing exercises, hand mudras and affirmations that lowers anxiety, I have a few thoughts on how we can all cope with anxiety and depression during the coronavirus pandemic.

Unlike the experts who want to talk about everything you are afraid about, I have a different take on how to overcome the fear that has taken over so much of our collective mindset these days.

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

When we focus on what we’re anxious about, we focus on the world the ego mind perceives.

Your ego may see sickness, death, unemployment, hatred, division, starvation and chaos.

Everybody who doesn’t agree with you is wrong, obviously!

Your ego – from the point of view of the ego – believes itself to be 100 percent correct about what you see, hear and experience.

Far be it from me to tell your ego that you are wrong!

The ego, you see, likes to be right.

The ego has a set of beliefs about the world that it simply projects out into the universe.

Then, as the ego observes the world, it looks for matches.

“Aha!” the ego proclaims.

“Further evidence I’m right!!! I see the destruction, devastation, poverty consciousness, despair and hopelessness that I believe the world actually is.”

A simple way to think of your ego is as a movie projector.

A movie projector beams out a reel of images, sounds and experiences onto a screen.

Your ego is always projecting outwards what you believe on the inside to be your personal truth.

So when the experts talk about solving anxiety, in many ways these so-called wise guys are just confirming what many people are believing these days – e.g. that the world is going to hell at an accelerated pace and that we all need to hold on for dear life – literally and figuratively.

As Albert Einstein observed, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

As long as we continue to believe that there’s this big scary world out there full of threatening people plotting and warring against us, that’s what we will continue to experience.

No matter how we load up on anti-anxiety medications, how many hours we spend explaining how hard life is to our friends and therapists  or how much we wish life would go back to the so-called good old days, we’re going to continue to experience more of the same until and unless we examine what we truly believe deep down.

So how do we look at this entire situation differently?

I am going to ask you a simple question.

Who do you think God is?

Now before you send me 20 emails accusing me of not being a Christian (or some other version of an unwashed, evil, unschooled or lost soul – the worst insult I recently received was that I am not a “traditional Christian” so please spare me your projected judgments) please understand that I’m not talking about religion.

I’m asking you what you believe about the Higher Power that rules YOUR life.

I was asking myself this very question this morning.

“Who do I believe God is?” I wrote in my journal.

Here is what I came up with:

  • Unconditionally loving
  • Kind
  • All knowing
  • All seeing
  • Abundant
  • Powerful
  • Wise
  • Forgiving
  • Compassionate
  • Generous
  • Aware, awake, fully conscious of every thought and deed
  • Oneness
  • One energy

Now here’s why what I think God is happens to be so important.

When I connect to my inner being, I connect to the part of me that is eternal.

When I connect to my eternal being, I connect to God.

When I connect to this aspect of myself, I experience, feel, sense and become fully aware of this Higher Power who is God.

And I project that out into the universe, fully anticipating that this is what I can expect from my God.

So, when I believe that God is loving, kind, all knowing, all seeing, abundant, powerful, wise, forgiving, compassionate, generous, aware, awake, fully conscious of every thought and deed, oneness and one energy then that is what I receive and experience back from life itself.

If, on the other hand, you believe that God is:

  • Judgmental
  • Punishing
  • Harsh
  • Angry
  • Capricious
  • Inconsistent
  • Arbitrary
  • Cruel
  • Vicious
  • Good to some people but not others

What do you think you will expect from life?

And now that you’re thinking about it, what do you think your inner and outer experience of life will feel like?

There’s a word for that: anxious.

You will always be waiting for the hammer to drop.

It’s just a question of when, where and how badly you get hurt.

I’ll let Albert Einstein do the rest of the talking for me here:

“I think the most important question facing humanity is, ‘Is the universe a friendly place?’ This is the first and most basic question all people must answer for themselves.

“For if we decide that the universe is an unfriendly place, then we will use our technology, our scientific discoveries and our natural resources to achieve safety and power by creating bigger walls to keep out the unfriendliness and bigger weapons to destroy all that which is unfriendly and I believe that we are getting to a place where technology is powerful enough that we may either completely isolate or destroy ourselves as well in this process.

“If we decide that the universe is neither friendly nor unfriendly and that God is essentially ‘playing dice with the universe’, then we are simply victims to the random toss of the dice and our lives have no real purpose or meaning.

“But if we decide that the universe is a friendly place, then we will use our technology, our scientific discoveries and our natural resources to create tools and models for understanding that universe. Because power and safety will come through understanding its workings and its motives.

“God does not play dice with the universe.”

Albert Einstein goes down in history as a great physicist but nobody can fault his thought process. You might as well call him a great theologian.

I’m still a fan of counselors, psychologists and therapists of all kind. Medication has its place. Natural healing remedies have their place.

But if you find yourself noticing that you are overcome by fear right now, you may do well by sitting with yourself for some time and asking yourself a simple question:

“Who do I really believe God is?”

If you can come to the conclusion that you live in a friendly universe you may find the equanimity to live through these times of tremendous uncertainty, knowing and experiencing that all things work out for your higher good even if you don’t know how just yet.

When you read a book or watch a movie, how fun would it be for you if you knew the ending before you even started?

As I wrote about in my 10th book Reading the Soul, the only way through the spiritual experience is through the cloud of unknowing.

Make peace with the mystery but hold fast to your belief about the God you yourself experience.

What is healing? Healing happens when you connect to the Higher Power within you.
