OVERCOM THE SYSTEMS THINKING CAPABILITIES GAP TO REALISE THE FULL PRODUCTIVE POTENTIAL OF NEW TECHNOLOGY
An interesting article in the financial times?says, “There are at least three reasons to believe we may be entering a new phase of more productive technological deployment.”
“First, the sharp downturn in public market tech valuations has resulted in a sizeable outflow of employees from big tech companies and an inflow of digitally savvy workers into mainstream businesses.” This means mainstream businesses can hire more technologically proficient employees.
“Second, some of the most powerful technological tools, such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing and low-code/no-code software, can increasingly be accessed by every business.”
Third, venture capital investors remain enthusiastic about backing purpose-driven start-ups that are trying to address at least one of the UN’s sustainable development goals.”
These trends do indeed provide reason to believe we may be entering a new phase of more productive technological deployment, but I would be even more optimistic if it were not for the existence of the “systems thinking capabilities gap,” as I have called it.

Technology can be applied productively to create value by solving problems or realise opportunities, but doing so often required the ability to understand and cope with complexity. Frequently it also means being able to make smart strategic choices under uncertain and dynamic conditions. These challenges require systems thinking capabilities that most directors and executives simply do not have. That is hardly surprising given that systems thinking rarely features in the education that most executives will have had. It is rarely taught at universities, even in business schools
It is for this reason the Enlightened Enterprise Academy worked with an internationally recognised authority on systems thinking to provide executives with the world’s first executive programme in Critical Systems Thinking and the Management of Complexity, based on a book with the same title. Dr Mike C Jackson also delivers the programme online for global audiences. It will run again from February 21st, 2023, and the application process is now open. DETAILS
I firmly believe that if we are to overcome the Productivity Puzzle (as economists call it), and realise the full productive potential of new technologies, we must address the systems thinking capabilities gap. I also believe Critical Systems Thinking should be considered a 21st century core competence. ??

2 年Many like me and the author are proponents of more enlightened enterprises. The real question is, where is the proof, beyond anecdotes, that this is not only the right thing to do, but also the profitable thing to do. Our research in collaboration with Harvard Business School, over the past 5+ years tested this hypothesis. The early results were published in Inc 2 years ago: https://www.inc.com/bill-fotsch/a-key-strategy-to-double-your-profitable-growth.html We are working with HBS on a more comprehensive report, which will be published later this year. The good news, enlightenment and profitability go together. Quite an epiphany for many... :)
