Over a dozen ideas to help Ukraine!

Your family, friends, neighbours, workplace colleagues as well as your immediate local community leaders will be doing what they can now to help people in Ukraine. Mountains of blankets, clothes, food, toys, and key supplies are building up and being swiftly despatched from here in Manchester and further afield back in my home city of Preston.

I am doing my little bit in both cities. But on a bigger canvass I was really glad to see that Mr Tom Arms who is the author of “America Made in Britain” and “The Encyclopaedia of the Cold War.”, is co-ordinating information exchanges about what can be done nationwide and beyond our boundaries. His blog, reproduced below, captures information about and signposts to a selection of organisations co-ordinating these and other efforts. Why not do four things?

1.?????Add to the listing below -it is not exhaustive

2.?????Get in touch with any of those listed if you think you can help

3.?????Get in touch with your MP and Councillor with your thoughts and ideas. At the end of Mr Arnold’s blog, I have added a link to a recent House of Commons Research Library bulletin which brings us up to speed on the economic, military, geo- political and social realities prevailing just now. There is also an extensive reading list with a chronological survey going back to 2014 when the Crimea was seized by pro-Russian forces

4.?????Let’s not forget that many Russians are joining in the protests against this war-both in their country and globally. This link to the Guardian takes us further into this aspect although naturally a lot of good work in Russia is hidden from view. Mr Arnold’s list and narrative appears below. If you cannot directly get to the links just goggle the listed organisation(s) of your choice.

Mr Arnold writes: -

United Help Ukraine?is probably the biggest umbrella organisation for Ukrainian charities. It launched a fundraiser last month, saying it is working with other emergency response to “prepare humanitarian aid to civilians in anticipation of a Russian invasion.”

?Razom for Ukraine?was set up in 2014 to raise money for various projects in Ukraine. As the Russian invasion loomed, they established an emergency response unit to purchase critical medical supplies and amplify the voice of Ukrainians on the world stage.

?Voices of Children?was established in 2015 to help children of Eastern Ukraine cope with the traumas of war. As the conflict spreads so does its work.

?Sunflower of Peace?has launched a fundraiser to prepare first aid medical backpacks for paramedics and doctors on the front lines.

?Revived Soldiers of Ukraine?is a non-profit organization focused on medical aid and rehabilitation for Ukrainian soldiers.

It is feared that up to five million Ukrainians will end up in refugee camps in Moldova, Poland and Bulgaria. The?UN High Commissioner for Refugees?is the world’s most experienced agency at dealing with displaced persons.

?The International Red Cross?is the oldest humanitarian organisation in the world. There is also a branch in Ukraine.

?UNICEF?has been working for several years in Eastern Ukraine supporting health, nutrition, HIV prevention, education, safe drinking water, sanitation and protection for children and families caught in the conflict. It is expanding its activities elsewhere in the country.

And here are my links to two House of Commons research publications: -

1.?????Published on Sunday this publication features Commons Library publications relevant to the current crisis in Ukraine.

2.?????Published yesterday, this signposted reading list provides links to Parliamentary and selected other material on the crisis in Ukraine since Crimea was seized by pro-Russian forces in 2014.

?Add any more information to the blog below and a big thank you to Mr Arnold.

Breaking News! This scheme goes live tomorrow -18th March ‘Homes for Ukrainian’ Refugees Scheme with ‘Thank You’ Payment to Sponsors A small monthly payment will be available for UK host families who volunteer to house Ukrainians fleeing their homeland due to the Russian invasion. UK Government has launched the ‘Home for Ukraine’ scheme which allows individuals, charities, community groups and businesses across the UK to offer a room or home rent-free to Ukrainians escaping the war in their home country. The refugees do not need to have any ties to the UK to be eligible for accommodation. In return, the Government is offering: · A ‘thank you’ payment of £350 per month for up to 12 months. The payment is limited to one payment per residential address. The intention is that these payments will be tax free for individuals and will not affect benefit entitlement and will legislate if necessary. · Local authorities a total of £10,500 in extra funding per refugee for support services.
