OVER 2,100 AVAILABLE OPENINGS IN LOGISTICS
Josephine Teo
Minister for Digital Development and Information at Ministry of Digital Development and Information
This week’s Jobs Situation Report focuses on the Logistics Industry. Like many other industries, logistics was also impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the effects within the industry were uneven - those serving hard-hit sectors such as aviation and aerospace were more adversely affected, while those providing e-commerce and serving critical sectors like Healthcare, saw a surge in demand.
In order to keep workers from hard-hit sectors in jobs, Workforce Singapore (WSG) worked with companies with hiring demands to take them in on a secondment basis through the SGUnited Jobs Initiative. For example, to cope with increased demand for services, DB Schenker took in 21 logistics assistants from Razor Solutions, a subcontractor specialising in aviation ground operation. From Apr 2020 to Sep 2020, close to 380 workers in hard-hit sectors were assisted through this arrangement.
As the Logistics industry continues to transform through digitalisation, new, higher-value roles are being created. There are currently more than 2,100 available openings under the SGUnited Jobs and Skills Package which have not been filled. While majority of openings are for non-PMETs, the industry offers a wide range of job roles for jobseekers with different backgrounds. They also provide good career prospects, and room for workers to rise through the ranks.
In fact, the Logistics industry has been one of the most open industries, welcoming people who are transitioning from other occupations and industries. This because companies in the industry serve a wide range of clients. When they hire individuals with different industry experience and diverse networks, these individuals have more points of connection, and can better understand client requirements.
To help mid-career switchers acquire the relevant domain knowledge and reskill them into their new roles, employers can tap on WSG’s career conversion programmes. One example is 51-year old Noraman bin Ibrahim, a former private hire vehicle driver who had made the successful switch into logistics through WSG’s PCP for Logistics Executive. Companies also offer traineeships and attachments for those with little or no prior experiences.

Thank You Minister and MOM for striving and creating Opportunity for locals.. I sincerely hope We Sporeans stop complaining Foreigners steal our job. Foreigners work 12 to 15hrs a day 6 days a week as compared to us 8-10hrs a day. Be honest to ourselves, will locals do tough jobs if not becoz of Covid? Will they rather stay home or Drive Grab and have freedom?
