Outworking the Competition - A Telecom Story
Isn’t it true? The more you dedicate your time to what you do the more success you will have over your competition. You know who is putting in the time, it could be anything. If you are striving to get better at whatever you are trying to do or accomplish it will show in the results over time. Moreover, what also separates average and exceptional performers is doing things differently than what the other guys are doing and not being afraid of stepping outside of their comfort zone. It is easy and safe to be comfortable and that comfort is a habit that is hard to break out of. That is exactly why stars in the organization shine because they embrace the uncertainty and take chances daily. What do we have to lose? The world keeps spinning, right?
An example in my work recently bubbled up the motivation to write this post. What do you do Daniel? I am a Fiber Sales Professional and I reach out daily to businesses trying to figure out how I can help them with their connectivity needs. I create conversations and keep in touch with worthwhile companies and individuals within them. In this real deal, I stayed in touch with a company and finally was able to turn them into a customer. However, in the telecom game any deal is gold and there is competition between direct reps who are on the sales team of the carrier. That is me. And indirect reps, who are a go between the customer and carrier. Both of which serve a purpose and sometimes these two worlds come together and step on toes. Well then it comes down to who has a better relationship with the client. I did in this scenario, but it could have gone the other way. I do not take it personal when I miss out on an opportunity to the indirect side. It is part of the game.
Given all that, when that indirect individual calls my boss, complains and wastes my boss’s time that just tells me they were outworked and lazy. They are hoping for opportunities to materialize and fall out of the sky without putting in any time and effort. Moral of the story, if you can stay focused and work at your craft good things will happen to you. Life has a funny way of repaying you for your hard work.
