Outreach June Newsletter - The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Special Edition

Welcome to the 1st Edition of the Outreach Newsletter which commemorates the fantastic engagement by the teams across London over the Jubilee Weekend.

This regular newsletter will showcase the work of Outreach across London as well as provide information on your local team and upcoming events.

From all the Central Team who have been working in the Specialist Operations Room, we would like to thank you all for all your support. We hope you've had an amazing Platinum Jubilee Weekend.

The work that the Outreach Teams are carrying out across the Capital is an important contribution in our aims of increasing diversity within the Metropolitan Police, leading us to be more representative of London and its communities. Thank you all so much for what you are doing, it's making such a difference!

The Met's Outreach Teams are working to increase the number of Police Officers from Female and Black, Asian and Multiple Ethnic Heritage backgrounds to make the Met representative of the communities of London.

People from under-represented backgrounds bring with them different life experiences to add to the wealth of experience our people already have. To help recruit candidates from diverse backgrounds, we've set up an Outreach team to build confidence in those communities where historically trust has been low; inform people about the fantastic opportunities available within policing; inspire people to be the change they want to see; and support them in actively applying to join the Met.

The Outreach Teams actively look for opportunities to work with community groups to increase the number of people who look at applying to become a Police Officer. The Outreach teams consist of an Outreach Lead, a Sergeant and three Constables based in each Basic Command Unit across London. Over the summer period the teams will be grouped in to clusters of North, South, East and West.

AS - Central South (Lambeth & Southwark)

AS Team is led by Sgt Becky Wienkamp & the Strategic Outreach Lead is Heba Gowiely. Joining them on the team is PC David Mafemi and PC Eric Anang.

Southwark borough is famous for Peckham Rye Lane which has lots of Caribbean to Afro fusion food market festivals.

AW Team is led by Sgt Yusuf Mehdi who has previously been a cybercrime investigator as well as a business analyst. The strategic Outreach Lead on AW is Avi Collins. Joining them on the team is PC Joao Da Costa, PC Leslie Cummings-Palmer and DC Shauna-Kaye Brown.

New Scotland Yard, the Met Police Headquarters is based in AW.

CE Team has Sgt Julius Ombok leading the team who has been a Met Police recruit trainer as well as an investigator. The strategic Outreach Lead for CE is Claire Maynard. On the team are PC Al Ceesay and DC Nisha Chandra-Square.

Tower Hamlets is known for the financial sector area Canary Wharf and Whitechapel market.

Camden market is world famous and Islington has a popular pub and theatre culture.

NA has one of the largest Cypriot-born people communities outside of Cyprus.

NW BCU covers the Iconic Wembley Stadium as well as BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, described as being Britain's first and largest authentic Hindu temple.

SN Team has Sgt Sara Ginn leading with strategic Outreach Lead Joseph Hylton. Joining them on the team are PC Martella Lawrence, PC Melissa Finn and DC Om Pathak.

Croydon has become famous for the amazing mural art which adorn public places. Bromley has London’s only tram system.

SW Team is headed up by Sgt Pardeep Sanghera who is level two public order trained and regularly works with our Territorial Support Group team. He is joined by strategic Outreach Lead Zee Goba. Working with them are PC Lavinia Osei and PC Osei Putt Mahehyong.

The River Thames travels through the whole of SW BCU.

WA Team is headed up by Detective Sgt Iqbal Meah, who has previously worked with the Met's Criminal Investigation Department. The strategic lead for WA is Outreach Lead Grace Bernard - Broadneck. They have PC Sharon Mitchell working alongside them.

Hillingdon is on the Heathrow airport flight path; Heathrow’s introduction has significantly contributed to the borough's growth and economic success
