Outrageous Claims and Marketing BS

Outrageous Claims and Marketing BS

I eye roll at least 5 times a day from ads telling me I can have a 7 figure business, or be a business goddess, or if I follow these 'secret' 5 steps I'll have all I desire, or super long emails disguised as 'we care about you' using NLP, but are really sales emails, or some other hyperbole.

Or excited posts about media wins, when you know the person has paid for it. That's not publicity, that's advertising.

I forgot...all those who claim to love you and are your new bestie if you sign your kidney away to them...and then when you're done, puff...never to be seen or heard from. But wait? I thought we were friends?

This is modern marketing but it is so fake.

When I started my business, I got sucked into doing this. It felt icky but the 'experts' told me it worked.

I do the opposite of what is being taught; I believe if someone wants to do business with me, they will. They'll do it because we've connected over something deeper.

While 'organic growth' is another marketing catchphrase, it's what I do. It's what I do for clients. Oh, it takes longer to get traction, but it's so much more delicious because you're giving back, sharing knowledge and being part of a community, making a difference. In an age of instant gratification, quick results are enticing...just not achievable unless you have a big budget.

PR is all about perception. I get why many get pulled in by the hype. It's attractive. But PR is also about relationships and caring about your audience. Some modern marketing couldn't give a toss...it's all about the money. Yeah...that's why we're in business but you still have to care.

My eyes will continue to roll.

Yes! I’m very over my LinkedIn inbox filling up with messages telling me that I need *insert whatever they are selling* in order to be successful. My personal favourites/the ones that irritate me the most are the ones that end with them stating that I will contact them. Over. It. ??

100% agreed Annette Densham! One thing that I have realized after running my own businesses for close to 10 years is exactly what you have said so pointedly “I believe if someone wants to do business with me, they will. They'll do it because we've connected over something deeper.” That is my mantra in work and in life!

Yep, mostly they make me laugh because it only takes about 2 more minutes to follow through and see that they couldn't possibly be telling the truth from their own current social results. Most of these claims that I see are of course within the marketing community (of course) - but aren't necessarily even doing what they say they were doing to get 7 figures. Rock on people if you're on 7 figures, but don't tell me that you're doing that with 231 social media followers and a gmail account.
