What is the Outlook for International Perishables Logistics?
So, what’s the outlook for the international perishables logistics marketplace in 2024, particularly as the peak time frame for shipping fresh-cut roses and other flowers for Valentine’s Day draws near? “While it’s tough to gauge, recent economic news and logistics industry survey results point to uncertainty – and even possibly volatility – within the perishables logistics marketplace,” says Cristina Moscoso, PFH’s West Coast general manager based in Los Angeles. Air cargo capacity may be on the rise for a number of reasons, which potentially means lower shipping costs for customers, but it may also mean a possible yield hit to the perishable logistics industry’s bottom line.?
“But we’ve got an experienced team, so internally we’re enhancing efficiency and trimming expenses to be on solid footing that aligns with what we see as the outlook for international perishables logistics in 2024,” she stresses. PFH has also begun researching how to further optimize their warehouse management system, while also looking for greater marketplace visibility and one-on-one, business-to-customer contact this coming year.
“We’re aiming to participate in more trade shows in 2024, specifically European fresh produce shows, since we have a very strong partner relationship with one of the major carriers on those routes,” Moscoso explains. “It’s a great opportunity to enhance our visibility and boost contact with customers, new and existing – the defining components of this year’s ?international perishables logistics outlook for Prime Fresh Handling.”
Fresh Produce Continues to be in Demand
While the 2024 outlook for international perishables logistics may be uncertain, market research suggests that demand for many types of perishables is still on the rise. For example, an industry report by Business Street shows that the global cut-flower packaging market size was valued at 1987.75 million dollars in 2022 and through 2028 will expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.67 percent – reaching 2927.63 million dollars by 2028.

Separately, in October 2023, Technavio, a leading global research and advisory company, issued a report estimating growth in the perishable goods transportation market of $7.43 billion between 2022 and 2027. Growth momentum will progress at a CAGR of 7.75 percent during that period. What’s driving that growth? Technavio cites technological advances in freight management, such as high-tech temperature and humidity monitoring devices that remotely monitor perishables. Those also create greater transparency between customers and shipping companies.?
Adapting to a Fast-Changing International Perishables Market
Looking ahead to 2024, the outlook for perishables logistics as the PFH team sees it is to tackle any marketplace hiccups with a solid business plan. Elements include continuing support for customers and business partners; honing the team’s ability to adapt quickly to fast-changing market conditions; enhancing communications; continuing innovation; and creating more efficiencies.
For instance, Moscoso says the Group plans to increase partnerships with businesses that offer similar services at different ports and airports such as Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and Seattle. “This will allow PFH to grow its network and offer more alternatives in transporting goods from these areas like pharmaceuticals, vaccines, medical equipment, vitamins and supplements,” she added.?
