Outgrown your role? Here's what to do next.

Hello, hello, bonjour, ciao,

Welcome to this edition of The Marketer Whisperer! If you’re new here, I’m so glad you’ve joined us. If you’re a long-time reader, thanks for sticking around - your support means everything!

This week, I want to dive into something I see over and over in my coaching sessions with marketing leaders. Maybe it’ll resonate with you too.

You’re good at what you do—really good. Your campaigns drive results, your team respects you, and your strategies have impact. But lately, you’ve been wondering: is this it?

The excitement you used to feel for the work has dimmed. You’re not quite bored, but the challenges that used to light you up don’t seem as fulfilling anymore. And when you look ahead, the next steps feel… uninspiring.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know: this isn’t failure. It’s a signal that you’ve outgrown your current role—and it’s time to look at what comes next.

Why outgrowing your brand role can feel so unsettling

Growth is a funny thing, isn't it? It doesn’t usually announce itself with a neon sign - instead, it creeps in as a quiet restlessness. You’re really on top of the work at hand, but now your mind is searching for something bigger, something deeper.

The challenge?

  • You’re not sure what “bigger” looks like yet.
  • Your current role feels too small, and yet the future feels really unclear.
  • You’re not inspired by what’s next on the corporate ladder (sorry, boss!)

It’s not about leaving your job tomorrow or changing to a totally new field - in fact, it’s really about reconnecting with what makes you excited to show up every day.

A simple exercise to get your vision back out from the dark depths

Here’s a quick, 10-minute exercise I often share with my coaching clients. It’s designed to help you clarify what’s next without overwhelming yourself.

  1. Your “highlight reel” where you take a moment to think about the projects or achievements you’re most proud of in your marketing career. Jot down 3 that stand out.
  2. What’s energizing vs. draining your energy. Write 2 quick lists. You'll probably need another piece of paper and you get to notice all the things that really get you excited and the bits that make you want to poke your eyes with a fork (You can be super specific. Eg. I used to love the idea of writing a brief, but hating the need to be concise by perhaps losing some important information....)
  3. Visualize the “next chapter” Imagine your ideal workday—not your ideal title. Read that again! One of my favorite tools for this is a simple mind map. Draw a circle with your name in the middle, then branch out with roles, skills, or projects that excite you. This visual can unlock possibilities you hadn’t considered.

A thought to take with you

Feeling restless doesn’t mean you’ve hit a dead end - instead, it’s a sign you’re ready for a bigger challenge. The question isn’t "What’s wrong with me?", it's the exciting "What’s calling me forward?"

The answers are already inside you. You just need to pause long enough to listen.
