Out of Their Shell: Dan’s Rising Stars – Rodney Johnson
Every so often, you come across young professionals who seem to shine a little brighter in the vast sky of our industry. These individuals aren’t just rising stars; they’re guiding lights, leading the way with their passion, commitment, and drive to make a difference. In the water and wastewater world, these bright stars often emerge unexpectedly, bringing fresh ideas and new energy to a field that thrives on innovation and leadership.
In launching the "Out of Their Shell: Dan’s Rising Stars" series, I want to highlight some of these individuals whose achievements stand out, and whose influence promises to shape the future. The first person I’m proud to feature is Rodney Johnson—a prime example of a young professional who is not only excelling in his field but also lighting the path for others to follow.
What truly sets Rodney apart is his remarkable achievement as a TCEQ Instructor. In this critical role, Rodney is responsible for educating and preparing the next generation of wastewater professionals, ensuring that they uphold the highest standards in the field. His dedication to teaching, sharing knowledge, and fostering excellence makes him an indispensable asset to both his peers and the industry at large. His impact isn’t just felt in the classroom—it’s reflected in the legacy he’s helping to build for future generations.
In addition to being a TCEQ Instructor, Rodney is one of the few Emergency Response Team members at the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWWTP). His ability to remain calm and act decisively during crises reflects his strong leadership skills and commitment to public safety. Whether he’s in the field or guiding others through critical training, Rodney consistently demonstrates what it means to be a leader.
Rodney’s journey mirrors the broader trends we see in today’s workforce. The traditional boundaries of age and seniority in leadership roles are shifting, allowing talented individuals like Rodney to step up sooner and make a meaningful impact. His story is a reflection of the concept of “perennials”—those who stay relevant and adaptable, regardless of age or experience. Rodney is proof that leadership comes from one’s ability to grow, learn, and adapt in a rapidly changing world.

As Rodney continues to come out of his shell, it’s clear that he’s more than just a rising star—he’s a guiding light, leading the way for others to follow. His journey is one of rapid growth, responsibility, and lasting impact, and I’m excited to see where it takes him next. The future looks incredibly bright for Rodney and the industry as a whole.
Here’s to Rodney Johnson, a young professional who is already leaving his mark, inspiring others, and blazing trails in our field. I can’t wait to watch him continue to rise and lead the way.
