Or is it the providers of these LLMs who have failed to be transparent about how user data is being utilised?

This is a far cry from the well-known adage, "if it's free, then you are the product". While inferring preferences from search queries to optimise advertising algorithms is one thing, potentially exposing sensitive business information, such as draft annual reports, to the public domain is a much more serious concern.

As a result, businesses are forced to invest significant resources in preventing data leakage through LLMs. However, it's crucial to recognise that the blame for this situation lies squarely with the corporations providing these tools, such as OpenAI, Inflection, and Google, rather than the employees who use them.

The popularisation of the term "Shadow AI" itself seems designed to make users feel guilty for utilising these tools, even though the responsibility for ensuring data privacy and security should fall on the shoulders of the providers. As the industry evolves and becomes more regulated, and as confidence in data privacy measures grows, the Shadow AI problem may eventually fade away. But for now, it remains a significant issue that demands our attention.

  3. Establish Clear Policies: Develop a comprehensive policy framework that outlines acceptable AI use and consequences for non-compliance. Make sure it's grounded in transparency, accountability, and fairness.
  4. Train Your Employees: Kolide's study reveals that only 48% of workers have received training on effective AI use. Bridge this gap with mandatory training programs that equip employees with the knowledge and skills they need.

The key is to approach the issue with empathy and understanding, rather than punishment and blame. It’s not their fault the LLMs are stealing the data and YOU are taking your time training them to avoid it ;-)
