out on a limb in 2020 with MOM/MES

out on a limb in 2020 with MOM/MES

I’m going out on a limb - I predict this is the year of real take-up in MES/MOM solutions!

You see, I’m a Smarter Manufacturing nut.

It started long ago and of all places, in real estate. The world of CAD drew me in and more so with the arrival of BIM. Working on large programs in emerging economies makes you very very hands-on, trust me!

I got the bug and it spread to PLM and then into seeing my team's design come efficiently to fruition (manufacturing). And then one day in 2017, I was with a bunch of fanatical Germans who were extolling the virtues of Industry 4.0 Technologies and they hooked me.

There were Robots, and I’d always loved R2D2

AR/VR, 3D Printing all sounded cool and then….

The Internet of Things - really? I thought, couldn’t we have come up with something more ingenious than that for a name?

BigData - really?

What was coming next? "Huge Whatsits"?

and the list went on, until at that moment Franz introduced me to the Digital Twin. Well not really introduced, as that would be weird. He showed me a simulated snapshot of an aircraft jet engine (& he roared too) that produced more data on one flight than the whole of Facebook in a day. Now that was double cool and I really got excited.

Now really, I got excited because I was in a conference in the UK and everyone was hesitating, waiting to see who else was going to do it 1st

It struck me right there and then. This is going to be de facto for every manufacturing line, every product to be produced in the future and here we are hesitating? So many saying “Yes but, who else has done it?”

This has to be it. It has to be The opportunity, but then I realized it all needed pulling together and I scratched my head.

And then, I remembered it was back in 2001, after I’d ridden the ERP wave and was on the look out for the next big enterprise solution. I had then thought it was PLM, but of course it spluttered and never really hit the heights of SAP/ERP.

But now I realized, we need to revisit PLM to pull it all together and to drive it through with MOM/MES and at the same time creating the de facto for all manufacturers The Digital Twin of the product and the manufacturing lines.

So here I am today shouting it to the world as often and as loud as I can:

1.we must innovate more. We must bring through new products and use the Product Innovation Platforms for an efficient & collaborative approach

2.when we’ve designed those great new products, we need to simulate and visualize with digital manufacturing solutions

3.then execute on those designs through great MOM/MES solutions

That’s it for now, but please if you need great Program Managers, Project Managers, Solution Architects, Application Consultants, DevOps guys across these enterprise solutions, then you know where to find me: Somewhere between LA & London

So pick up the phone, send me a text, an email, a DM, a carrier pigeon - i don't care, you get the message!

Couldn't agree more. We at Cassini Systems feel strongly about the same. We are building the most comprehensive digital manufacturing platform with MOM/MES as our newest module.? Check us out at: www.cassini-systems.com www.cassini-systems.com/manufacturing

I agree that 2020 will be the year for MES/MOM.? However, I have some concerns that too many companies are not fully understanding the value and power that the "right" MES will bring their organisation.? In fact, I have seen first hand where companies will say "we have decided on "X" MES because, we have a strategic relationship with our ERP company or PLM company that also has a MES solution".? The key isn't deploying a MES solution, it is deploying the correct MES for your business and it is often times not the MES solution that their ERP or PLM provider are pushing.? It is important for companies to conduct a Business Value Assessment in order to fully understand what solution is best for them as well as to have clear alignment of that solution with their business objectives and initiatives.? After all, that is the main reason companies need Digital Twin, to deliver business value.? One prime example of this Lockheed Martin deployed iBASEt's Solumina MES solution for F-35, choosing it over their ERP MES solution and the numbers speak for themselves: 2019 F-35 Manufacturing Numbers exceed expectations and in fact, Lockheed Martin increased F-35 production 47% from 2018 while, reducing costs.? That is why companies need to not only need to deploy MES but, deploy the correct MES.? The selection of the correct MES solution is "mission critical" to a company's success as MES sits at the heart of the company's business. Great new products designed and manufactured with systems that create Business Value makes the perfect combination for success.? Thank you for your post and here is to a great 2020! ? ?

I like the quote "when we’ve designed those great new products, we need to simulate and visualize with digital manufacturing solutions, then execute on those designs through great MOM/MES solutions". Here's to more progress in those areas in 2020!
