Our World | Understanding the Importance of Neurodiversity: A Personal Perspective
Meet Tom Portingale , a devoted dad who's on a mission to champion the cause of neurodiversity, both at home and at work. With a young son diagnosed with ADHD, Tom's journey is filled with daily battles and heart-warming victories. He opens up about the challenges of raising a neurodivergent child and the support he's found within the RS family.
Tom, our Head of Employer Brand Marketing told us; “To fully grasp why supporting neurodiversity is so vital, it's important to share a personal story. For every well-known figure like Richard Branson, who has openly discussed his experiences with dyslexia and ADHD, there are countless others whose stories remain unheard. As a parent of a 7-year-old son with ADHD, I know first-hand the challenges that come with raising a neurodivergent child.
“Our daily life is filled with both struggles and small victories. My son was unable to attend school for an entire year and then had to cope with a reduced timetable. My wife had to step away from her career to provide the care he needed, as he found it difficult to manage after-school activities. Public outings are often stressful, with ‘fight or flight’ responses triggered by unexpected changes. The constant worry about his safety, his ability to navigate social interactions, and his struggle to form friendships has been emotionally draining for our family.”
ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, affecting approximately 5-10% of children worldwide. For many families, the journey to diagnosis and effective support can be long and arduous. The impact of ADHD extends beyond the individual, influencing every aspect of family life, from daily routines to long-term plans. Without proper intervention, children with ADHD can struggle academically, socially, and emotionally, making early diagnosis and specialised support crucial. In Tom's case, the road was tough, but with the right help, despite the ongoing challenges, the family have cause for optimism.

“Since his diagnosis, there has been a noticeable improvement in his quality of life. Thanks to a combination of medical interventions and the invaluable support from Special Educational Needs (SEN) professionals, he is now back in school full-time. Each day, his confidence grows, his connections with others strengthen, and his sense of self-worth deepens.?
“Our celebrations may not be grand, but they are deeply meaningful. They come in the form of small wins - moments of pride when we see him thriving in ways that once seemed impossible. It's about finding ways to help him feel normal in a world that still largely caters to neurotypical individuals.
?“I am also incredibly grateful for the support I receive from my colleagues at RS. Their encouragement and understanding have been a source of strength for me, helping me navigate the challenges of balancing work and family life. Together, we can continue to raise awareness and create a more inclusive environment for everyone.”

2 个月I can relate to every single detail of that article Tom. My story is very similar albeit involving my ten year old daughter, my 7 year old twin boys, and a mum surviving a brain tumour.
What a great honest insight!
