In Our Work: Finding Eternal Purpose
Scripture: Philippians 1:21 (NIV) - "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."
Introduction:
In the bustling rhythm of our work lives, it's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of worldly achievements and success. However, the apostle Paul's profound statement in Philippians 1:21, "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain," calls us to reflect on the deeper purpose of our labor. This devotional explores how we can align our professional endeavors with our eternal calling, recognizing that while our work on earth is temporary, its impact can have eternal significance.
Devotional:
Paul's declaration is a powerful reminder that our true life is found in Christ, not in the accomplishments or accolades we earn in our careers. This perspective doesn't diminish the importance of work; instead, it reorients our understanding of its purpose. Our work becomes an avenue through which we live out our faith and glorify God.
So, what does it mean to work towards something eternal in a temporary world? Firstly, it means recognizing that our work is a gift from God and an opportunity to serve Him. Colossians 3:23 encourages us to work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men. This shifts our motivation from seeking personal glory to aiming for God's glory in all we do.
Edifying the workplace, then, becomes about creating an environment that reflects God's love and truth. It's about demonstrating integrity, compassion, and excellence. We can edify our colleagues by being sources of encouragement, by speaking words that build up rather than tear down, and by standing up for justice and righteousness.

Furthermore, understanding that "to live is Christ" means being Christ-like in our interactions. It’s about being patient, forgiving, and understanding with our coworkers. It’s showing grace in difficult situations and love to those who may be hard to love.
Living with the mindset that "to die is gain" reminds us that our ultimate hope and future are not found in this world. This allows us to work with a sense of peace and assurance, knowing that our true reward is in heaven, not in earthly recognition or success.
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, guide us to find our purpose in You as we navigate our professional lives. Help us to remember that our work is an opportunity to serve and glorify You. May we be a light in our workplaces, reflecting Your love and grace in all our interactions. Remind us daily that our true life is in Christ, and our hope is in the eternal, not the temporary. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection:
How can you align your work with the eternal purpose found in Christ? In what ways can you be a positive influence in your workplace, reflecting the values and character of Jesus?
