Our week at Oorvani: Join our WhatsApp broadcast channel | Notes from waste learning session | Editorial on Kolkata’s rape & murder incident

On August 9th, as announced earlier we hosted the Active Citizen Workshop: Fixing waste journeys for a group of active waste management enthusiasts. It was a learning session co-facilitated by Pinky Chandran, founding member and Trustee of the Solid Waste Management Roundtable (SWMRT), and Sobia Rafiq, co-founder of Sensing Local.?

Meera K, our Founder Trustee kicked off the session with her own insights into the domain of waste management gleaned over years as a volunteer and active citizen herself. Pinky and Sobia took the participants through the journey of various streams of waste and their personal observations from the ground. Finally, the group broke up into teams, each discussing specific scenarios, alternative processes and solutions, and behavioural changes needed to address challenges in each case.?

The second video story from our Citizen Journalism workshop is also out. In that, young members of Vyasai Thozhargal highlight the lack of respect for sporting cultures and the lack of equal access to sporting facilities.

Vyasarpadi has been known for its sporting culture which inspired movies like the boxing hit Saarpatta Parambarai by Pa Ranjith. But today, youth here struggle to find suitable avenues for practice, given the deteriorating sporting facilities and commercialisation of the few clubs and grounds in the area.?

Through this video prepared by participants in our workshop, we hope to catch the attention of Tamil Nadu's Youth and Sports Minister Udaynidhi Stalin, the area MLA RD Sekar, and MP Dr Kalanidhi Veeraswamy. So do share this video widely.? And while you're at it, please also subscribe to our YouTube channel.
