Our Users Don't Need Live Training

Hello, it's time to dispel another myth about enterprise technology adoption. This article is part 2 of 4.

Myth: Are live (virtual or face to face) sessions even needed anymore, if users prefer online, on-demand, self-paced content?

My response: Remember...adults across the enterprise have different learning preferences. This is why we stress the importance of a learning needs assessment, where the impacted audiences are identified and we dig into how each group prefers to consume new information and training. What most organizations will find is that a blended learning solution is optimum, depending on the degree of change.

Some roles will require high-touch events to discuss highly complex changes, or because they learn best by watching others demonstrate new tasks. A primary goal of live forums is to coach users on how best to "help themselves" back on the job.

Other roles will be quite satisfied to find answers in an self-service content repository...as long as they know it exists, which should be addressed through a robust communication campaign.

Our colleague Matt Donovan uses an analogy that I love - he says the best blended learning solutions are more like a smoothie than a salad...the right mix of ingredients comes together in a way that transforms the solution into a more effective result.

Nothing against salads...

Love the analogy Ellen. While I love a good salad, the benefit and flexibility of a smoothie is always good for those of us that are busy on the go human beings. An observation from my experience is with BIG change often the best way to gain momentum (even a small pivot or embrace) is through live training. Once acceptance is reached (hopefully!) the motivation to continue through the change using other modalities of learning/skill building are more easily adopted.
