Our Unexpected Game Jam Triumph

Our Unexpected Game Jam Triumph

I'm not often posting here, but there's an occasion that's quite important to me. We've won a small local game jam. Or maybe it's not that small - I've never participated in one before. 147 people took part and published plenty of games in under 48 hours. The jam got more than 200 comments from people who played the games and hundreds of ratings.

A First-Time Success

This is the first ever game (not a gamified experience) that any of us (Thank you Daria, Dima and Jose) on the team has published. It's crazy and surprising that sometimes you can achieve something like that on a first try.

The Journey Behind the Scenes

But the truth is - and I'm talking here for myself - prior to this published game, I had written a ton of scripts for games that were too big, I had finished and dropped out from a bunch of game design courses, I've started learning Unreal and then just got stuck with problems and dropped it. There's a lot of this that will try to stop you before you'll get to the point where you'll have something finished.

Lessons Learned

Start small. Find people who can be your partners and team, people who will spark the creative process and are willing to collaborate. Think big, but keep the focus on finishing things (reminder for myself).

Play Our Game!

You can play the game on itch.io and drop a line with your feedback. I'm not gonna tell much about the game, just gonna drop here the dialogue from the starting screen:

Captain Dmitry: "We've detected a virus in the main dock. If you were there, you're exposed." Dr. Daria: "Isolate now. No contact — it spreads fast." Jose, HR: "Your only chance is reaching the quarantine dock. Move quickly, avoid everyone." Nick, Security: "Be careful. The virus might affect your movement, making it harder to get there."

Oh and we even got our game streamed by Giza!
