Our Top 5 Tips for Mental Health Self-Care

Our Top 5 Tips for Mental Health Self-Care

Today’s World Mental Health Day has a special focus on Suicide Prevention and I’ve been grateful to be able to share some amazing resources throughout the day. In support of the campaign this year we’d like to look a little closer to home and what we can do as individuals to look after our own mental health and to support those around use; our loved ones, our friends, our colleagues and children.

No matter where on the mental health continuum you are right now, it’s always beneficial to practice a little self-care. Whether you’re feeling a little low, super anxious, depressed or really happy - it’s useful to be mindful of how you are feeling and how you can help yourself and to encourage those around you to help themselves as well. We are not alone, we are in this together, so why not take some action today and be a mental health hero.

Here is a summary of our top 5 Tips for Mental Health Self-Care…

Tip 1: Breathe

It sounds ridiculous, but don't forget to breathe!! When we are stressed or anxious we hold a lot of tension in our body - and we hold our breath too. Practicing simple exercises can really help to reduce anxiety and lift mood. Mindfulness is great - and there are lots of simple practices that you can find online, or you could look for a yoga class and get a bit of movement in there too.

Tip 2: Talk to someone you trust

Is there a friend that you can confide in? Someone that you can reach out to when you need someone to talk to? Staying in contact with family and friends can help to combat loneliness and can have a positive effect on your mental health. If that isn't possible, when you feel low, you could consider getting in touch with the Samaritans - you can call them free on 116 123

Tip 3: Look after your physical health.

It sounds obvious but often when we don't feel great emotionally, we forget to look after ourselves physically. Just small actions can make a difference- getting outdoors has real benefits but if you can't do this, making sure you are eating regular nutritious meals and trying to get in to a consistent sleep pattern will support your physical and emotional needs.

Tip 4: Find things you enjoy doing.

Having meaningful activity in our lives is a fundamental need for us humans and low mood can stop us from doing things we normally enjoy. If you feel like stretching yourself, consider looking at community activities you can get involved in, or new skills you'd like to learn, but if this is too much, look for something small that you can do at home each day.

Tip 5: Speak to a professional. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Your GP should always be the first port of call as they can also rule out any underlying physical health problems and, if needed, direct you to the right sort of help. There have been huge improvements in accessing psychological therapies in recent years and different options to suit different people and problems. If you don't feel comfortable talking to a doctor right away there are lot of online resources and helplines - Mind are a good place to start www.mind.org.uk.

I’d love to hear from you and how helpful you find these tips and useful reminders

With love,

Claire xx
