Our top 5 list of data driven decisions in IT and Systems projects

In a world where everything is measured (KPIs, sales targets, quarterly earnings), why are we not doing more to quantify and measure IT project outcomes? Quantifying and prioritising based on contribution to objectives is one way to keeps projects on track, in the third article in our Technology Adoption Series we look at how this can be done without excessive overhead.

Quantification can be relatively straight forward. Our best tip is to break down projects into meaningful, deliverables (e.g. functional requirements) and quantify the impact of each deliverable across financial outcomes and other benefits or goals (more on this in the full article).

Once this is done you have a "ready made" framework for guiding projects, for example:

  • Driving prioritisation and decision making when the implementation is underway
  • Data driven means of comparing multiple initiatives and prioritising them
  • More accurate input to estimating Return On Investment (and time to returns)
  • Driving adoption activities and estimating realisable returns
  • Informing benefits maximisation - through maximising the impact of outcomes

If you are taking on a new IT or Systems project, read the full article to see how Quantifying can drive outcomes and maximise your success.
