Last week in our Versinetic’s company-wide Slack channel, we asked our Engineering team to share some of their top book recommendations. Along with some interesting and popular fiction reads, the engineers came up with a number of informative reads surrounding the climate crisis.

With all these great book recommendations, we were inspired to create a short list to share with you. So, here’s our top 5 great reads on climate change that have helped to influence the Versinetic team.

‘Saving Us’ by Katharine Hayhoe:

World-class climate Scientist, Katharine Hayhoe’s most recent book is really, surprisingly, upbeat. Her book is full of positive anecdotes and gets to the heart of why we find it difficult to both talk about and respond to the issues of climate change. ?So, if you ever face any climate anxiety (which apparently quite a lot of people do), perhaps it might even help.

?‘This Changes Everything’ by Naomi Klein:

This is the third in Klein’s trilogy of journalistic novels, following on from "No Logo", which focused on globalisation and "Shock Doctrine", which focused on austerity. "This Changes Everything" covers a wide range of climate related issues, closely examining the role that Capitalism plays.

‘The Eye of the Storm’ by Sir John Houghton:

This is the autobiography of Sir John Houghton, who was a pioneering British climatologist, who sadly passed away from Covid-19 in April 2020. Residing in Wales, Sir John was the first chair of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) in the late 80s. This means that his book has amazing insights into the development of climate science in a personal way. Upon John’s death, Katharine Hayhoe (Author of ‘Saving Us’) wrote an obituary for him, which was published in Nature Magazine, here.

‘Merchants of Doubt’ by Naomi Oreskes & Erik Conway:

Published in 2010, by two American historians of science, this non-fiction book takes a look at the other side: how a small group of individuals and institutions borrowed the people and tactics from the Tobacco industry to cast doubt on climate science.

‘Our House is On Fire’ by Malena Ernman, Greta Thunberg, Beata Ernman & Svante Thunberg:

What list of climate change reads is complete without input from young, Swedish activist Greta Thurnberg? A family affair book that was co-authored by Greta, her Mother, Father and Sister, tells the story of how and why 15-year-old Greta found herself sitting outside the Swedish parliament with a home made placard. What came from this was a multi-generational, worldwide rebellion.
