Weeding Through the AI Chatbots

It was inevitable that OpenAI would have a target on its virtual back, considering how strong a performance it had out of the gates in November 2022. Now there are plenty of alternatives as niche tools enter the market and more companies want to cash in on generative AI.?

ChatGPT remains the leader in the clubhouse, with the next tier of popular chatbots including Claude, Bing, and Jasper. The list is growing. Amazon has a chatbot, and Otter included one within its transcription service. Deloitte just created a tool exclusive to its employees. Microsoft aired a Super Bowl ad for its Copilot app. There’s even a chatbot that refuses to answer any query it’s given (No, it’s not Bard. Or Gemini. Or whatever Google is calling its AI this week.).

So which ones are right for you? As more chatbots enter the fray, it’s unlikely there’s one jack-of-all-trades that does everything for you. Here’s our top five and why — maybe there’s something new here you haven’t tried yet.?

  • ChatGPT: It’s connected to the internet, there’s now a marketplace for GPTs, and it can do many things, including create images with DALL·E.
  • Claude: The writing quality is better than ChatGPT (with far fewer empty phrases and tells like “in the ever-evolving landscape of…”), which makes up for its lack of internet connectivity.
  • Perplexity: This blows Bing out of the water for research because it uses AI to find better sources than whatever ranks high on traditional search engines. It also cites those sources clearly and answers in natural language.
  • Otter: Instead of exporting a transcript and asking another chatbot questions, you can now get answers directly from the recording.
  • Grammarly: It’s always good to have an extra set of eyes on copy before it goes out the door (even if the suggested edits aren’t always correct), and the plagiarism checker is a great way to validate that AI-generated content is truly unique.

??? @Mentions come for GPTs

What’s happening: OpenAI released a feature it calls “@mentions” that allows users to quickly call up GPTs within the context of a chat without changing windows to access that GPT. Typing “@” into the text box brings up a list of recent GPTs, and users can select one to use for that specific message in the conversation.

Who asked for this?: The initial conversation on the OpenAI developer forum wondered if this feature is a nail looking for a hammer. Some users complained that it “steals focus” away from what the user is trying to accomplish.

Why you’d use it: If you have a specific task that a GPT is really good at, you might want to recall it while you’re in the midst of doing something else. Let’s say you’re working on building out an outline for an article, and you realize you need more research to support the argument you’re making. Without starting a new conversation and returning to your outline, you can simply call up the Consensus GPT and gather academic research to support your post.

Quote of the Week

“It’s really giving companies a chance, especially with the advertising, to pitch their angle of how is this going to be a positive thing for people for humanity and to be able to see it in the light that it creates a positive impact.”

— Gaurav Misra, CEO of AI-powered video creation software Captions, to CNBC on the public perception of AI
