Our Top 10 Tips When Crafting a Compelling CV

So, you're on the hunt for a new job and need to polish up that old CV. But what exactly makes a CV stand out from the rest?

At Red Rock Partnership, we've seen countless CVs pass through our hands, and we've got a pretty good idea of what makes the ultimate one.

Here’s our Top 10 fun guide to help you craft a CV that not only stands out but also showcases the best of who you are!

1. Start with a Bang: The Perfect Opening

First impressions count, and your CV is no exception to this. Begin with a compelling personal statement. This isn't just a summary; it's the time to pitch you. Think of it as the trailer to a movie on your employment journey. What’s going to make YOU stand out.

Tip: Use engaging language that reflects your personality and enthusiasm. For example, "Passionate recruitment professional with a knack for connecting top talent with prestigious clients and a love for innovative strategies."

2. Your Work Experience: Show, Don’t Just Tell

Instead of just listing your job duties, highlight your achievements. Employers want to know what you’ve accomplished and how you can bring that success to their company. List your work experience in order, starting with your most recent.

Tip: Use bullet points for clarity and start each one with a powerful action verb. For example, "Started as a Sales Advisor and within 3 months was promoted to Senior Sales Advisor".

3. Skills: Balance the Hard and Soft

Hard skills are your technical abilities, while soft skills are personal attributes. The ultimate CV strikes a balance between the two.

  • Hard Skills: These could include specific software proficiencies, languages, or technical expertise.
  • Soft Skills: Think communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

Tip: Tailor your skills to the job description. If a job requires strong teamwork, highlight experiences where you collaborated effectively.

4. Education and Qualifications: Keep It Relevant

List your education and any relevant qualifications but remember to keep it concise. Employers are more interested in how your education has prepared you for the job.

Tip: Include any relevant courses or certifications that make you stand out.

5. The Extras: Make It Personal

Add a section for interests or hobbies to give employers a sense of who you are outside of work. This can make your CV memorable and spark interesting conversations during interviews.

Tip: Mention hobbies that demonstrate valuable skills or qualities. For example, “Captain of the local football team, demonstrating leadership and teamwork.”

6. Keep the Design Professional

A well-designed CV is easier to read and more engaging. Use a clean layout, consistent fonts (keeping it around 11pts), Make the headings bold to make your CV pop.

Tip: Don’t include photography/photos of you – it’s a CV not a portfolio!

7. Proofread, Proofread, Proofread

Typos and grammatical errors can make even the best CV look unprofessional. Take the time to proofread your CV thoroughly.

Tip: Ask a friend or family member to review it as well; a fresh set of eyes can catch mistakes you might have missed.

?8. Be Honest

Honesty is crucial. Embellishing your achievements or lying about your experience can come back to haunt you.

Tip: Focus on presenting your true strengths in the best possible light.

9. Include a Call to Action

Just like any good roundup, end your CV with a call to action. A simple “Looking forward to discussing how I can contribute to your team” shows your enthusiasm and readiness for the next step.

10. Tailor It for Each Application

One size does not fit all. Customise your CV for each job application to highlight the most relevant skills and experiences.

Tip: Use keywords from the job description to pass through applicant tracking systems (ATS)

Your CV is Your Canvas

Think of your CV as a canvas where you paint a picture of your professional journey. It's not just a document; it's a story of your achievements, skills, and personality. By following these tips and adding a dash of creativity, you’ll craft a CV that’s not only professional but also uniquely you. So, grab that digital brush and start creating the ultimate CV today!

Here are some top tips from our Permanent Division Account Manager, Grace Whittam.

“Ensure the first section at the top of your CV is a summary of your experience and includes specific applicable experience in relation to the job you desire. Make sure to use the phone number and email address that you use most often. You don’t want to miss an opportunity to hear from your dream job by having the wrong contact details. Work backwards from your most recent job and don’t leave any gaps! If you’ve took a gap year to go travelling, say so!”
