It's not surprising that most team members rarely hear anything truly inspiring from their leader. Why is that? Often, leaders don't realize the importance of helping employees connect with a deeper purpose.
What do employees want from us? Vision. Most workers spend their time focused on challenging tasks. They want us to explain the bigger picture, to lead us toward a better future.? Without a clear sense of purpose, employees struggle to see the value in their work, which leads to disengagement.
A 2019 Deloitte study found that companies driven by a strong mission have 30% more innovation and 40% higher retention rates. Similarly, a 2015 Imperative study showed that 73% of employees at purpose-driven companies are engaged, compared to only 23% at those without a clear purpose. Gallup's research also found that highly engaged teams have 21% greater profitability, thanks to employees being motivated by a purpose beyond just a paycheck.
People are inspired by leaders who genuinely care. Employees are drawn to managers who lead by example. When employees feel inspired, they know they’re valued and understand how their work contributes to the organization's greater goals.
