This article is the first of the “Our Success Stories” series, which will be shared monthly highlighting stories from our clients' success working with our tutors. Jennifer was worried about her daughter's grades in math, so she engaged in our services. We matched her daughter with our fabulous tutor, Eileen, who helped boost her confidence and comfort with math. She met at their home a few times each week and provided worksheets and activities, but more importantly, she established a connection with Jennifer’s daughter. Eileen made math approachable and an adventure for her, tremendously improving her confidence to speak up when she doesn’t understand something and taking chances to try when unsure. Her teacher just shared that now she asks questions in class, whereas at the beginning of the year, she sat quiet and confused. Ultimately, all these efforts have improved her grade in math.
Our tutor, Miss Susan M, believes
"The most critical step in tutoring is building a rapport with the family and her students"
Susan shared an experience with a homeschooled student who refused to write for his Mom. In her first session with him, she discovered he liked Mario Brothers, so she pulled out her portable whiteboard and wrote “Mario Brothers,” then gave him a whiteboard and had him write “Mario Brothers”. That was the start of an interesting journey, as he wrote more about Mario and the other characters; Luigi, Princess, and the villain Bowser. She tapped into his intrinsic joy so he didn’t feel like he was completing a "boring assignment".
Another mother, Sandy M, also shared her success story with Tutor Doctor, on how we helped her son Brendan stay on track with his assignments and taught him how to take notes effectively. Our tutor, Carey, who is patient and encouraging towards her student, also helped "translate" his teacher's requirements and simplify concepts he had learned in his online class. With her support, he will finish the semester with an A in BOTH his geometry and biology classes!
“I believe in a multi-tiered approach towards a child’s education journey, where the focus extends beyond the subject to the students themselves” Kimberly Selchan.
These three success stories from Tutor Doctor Chandler-Gilbert demonstrate the importance of engaging a tutor for your child at any level. Our tutoring programs offer personalized attention and support that help students develop their study and learning skills, setting them up for a lifetime of success.
