Since today is Diabetes Alert Day, I’m writing to share how our family has been impacted by type 1 diabetes (T1D)—currently an incurable disease—and to ask everyone to help spread the word about it by buying our son’s first book—available on AMAZON TODAY.

Emmet’s Story
Emmet was diagnosed with T1D in 2020 when he was 13 years old. Like many families, we failed to identify the symptoms until he was at a life-threatening stage. Luckily, we got him to the hospital in time.?
Inspired by his experience, Emmet (17) has published a children's book to help others recognize the signs of T1D and see that living a full life with this condition is possible.
The colorful book will delight all children, not just those living with diabetes.

As readers root for Drew, an adventurous dinosaur from Dinotopia, Emmet hopes that we all relate to the themes of visiting the doctor, embracing challenges, and celebrating differences.
As parents, we've witnessed Emmet pour his heart, mind, and months into creating Drew Discovers Diabetes. From developing a simple, inclusive story to resonate with all children to building gorgeous illustrations to getting feedback and editing to figuring out the mechanics of self-publishing on Amazon KDP. His only request is for us to tell our friends and connections to read the book to make sure other families know about T1D.

Emmet manages his T1D with the support of a wonderful community of medical professionals, friends, family, school, and organizations. We are especially grateful to the team at Stony Brook Medicine for the care when he was initially diagnosed and his endocrinology team at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City for ongoing care and guidance.
Thank you to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation JDRF International American Diabetes Association Beyond Type 1 and the many dedicated scientists, doctors, educators, advocates, social workers, nutritionists, staff, and volunteers for their tireless commitment to detection, treatment, advocacy, and research.
Emmet is committed to sharing his story and supporting these organizations by creating content and helping with programs to build awareness of the disease and, ultimately, make progress toward finding a cure.
The Urgency
T1D affects people of all ages. Knowing the signs is critical to getting timely care, yet the symptoms often go undetected, resulting in loss of life. Emmet created Drew Discovers Diabetes as a children’s book to help parents know the signs and to help newly diagnosed children feel empowered.
