Our Solutions to improve Sanskrit Education in India
We had a three pronged approach or three clear aims before us:-
Our first and basic aim was to inculcate in our students a love for Sanskrit language, a basic love for the language which would build in them a curiosity to explore in their later years, that rich literature which is hidden in its fold.
Our second aim was to repackage Indian culture and heritage for our students in such a manner that it would inculcate in them, the love for Indian culture and thereby a lasting respect for their Motherland.
(Recitation from Bhavani Bharti- a Sanskrit Poem on the greatness of India, penned by Sri Aurobindo)
Finally and most importantly, our third aim was to bring about a positive and conscious transformation in the character and values of our students. The one common crisis facing humanity at large is the crumbling of the morale edifice. The whole world is looking for solutions to this major crisis. It is the overarching duty of every educationist to address this important dimension in their student’s portfolio of education.
We realized that the values encrypted in Sanskrit are universal – 'sarvabhaumik' and eternal- 'sanatana' and they will enrich our students irrespective of their nationality, religion, class or creed. We decided to add to our curriculum, mantras and stuties from our ancient texts.
Sanskrit is replete with the revelations of our Rishis who through their meditations, arrived at lofty heights from where they saw the entire mankind as one family – “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”. They prayed for the happiness of “All” mankind –
Om! Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah.
Empowered by these three aims, a tentative curriculum was drawn up with the help of Dr. Sampadananda Mishra, Pondicherry, whose knowledge, sincerity and devotion to Sanskrit can only be matched by his simplicity and humility.
Our experiment of teaching Sanskrit from Pre Primary classes in Seth M.R. Jaipuria School began in 2003. As this experiment progressed, our teaching-learning materials also progressed. Devabhasha – our Sanskrit textbooks from Pre-Primary to class VIII were published by Integral Publishers.
We have an excellent body of teachers who speak, teach, live, breathe and enjoy Sanskrit. In the Sanskrit period, our teachers speak only and only in Sanskrit. Their influence on the children is indeed up-lifting.
One last word, some people wrongly believe that Sanskrit is a decaying language, that Sanskrit has outlived its usefulness. Such people speak out of ignorance. Sanskrit is neither ancient nor modern. Because of the eternal and universal values it contains, Sanskrit will remain forever. And Sanskrit will guide mankind forever.
Sanskrit na puratan hai, na nootan hai. Sanskrit to ek sanatan setu hai.
Sanskrit is neither ancient nor new. It is an eternal bridge between the two.
We will hand-hold all schools who would like to introduce our Devabhasha curriculum in their Schools, from searching for teachers for them, training them etc.
Our love for Nation building is our strength.
