Our roles don’t define us, it’s the choices and actions we take next that do!

Our roles don’t define us, it’s the choices and actions we take next that do!

There’s a lot of uncertainty out there at the moment, what the future holds for various businesses, industries, jobs and it’s leading to many seemingly strange decisions. One of these was where a large multinational has let go of a talented finance professional, who had delivered millions of measurable bottom line value to their business because his line management needed to right-size the number of people at his level to fit the normal distribution curve. It’s frustrating to hear stories of efficiency being put over effectiveness and it’s impacting many similarly valuable finance professionals.

This can be both demoralising for those losing their jobs as well as those left behind who pick up the pieces. There’ll be low points and these are tough times but know that as finance professionals you have valuable skills to help businesses through this period of uncertainty. Don’t lose sight of doing the right things that deliver valuable outcomes over doing things right. Economies move in cycles, and we’ll emerge more resilient. And for those of you who might say how do I know that, all I can say is that having been made redundant earlier in my career it was the best thing to have happen to me. And anyways, what have we got to lose by being positive and believing in ourselves. Our roles don’t define us, it’s the choices and actions we take next that do!

What do you think?

Andrew, in the story you tell - there's also something to learn about 1) working in an organisation where your contribution is valued and 2) not working for a manager that's (apparently) a prat!

Andrew Codd CGMA MBA Well articulated. Indeed I echo with you when you say : "'Our roles don’t define us, it’s the choices and actions we take next that do!" ... As the saying, this phase will also pass.
