Our Religion -2
GAURAV K GUPTA
OM (AUM) SO HUM-I am The Universe! SO HUM is derived from Sanskrit. "You are the same as I am" OM is the sound of the Universe. We are all connected.
A Conversation with Brothers and Sisters
On this lovely day of Nanak Jayanti & Full Moon in Taurus ( November 15, 2024) we have been thinking about what did Nanak mean when he said, there are no Hindus or Muslims? Did he mean to say, there are only Sikhs? Or did he mean that we are first humans?
First let's summarize the story, he apparently disappeared in the river for a few days, and everyone, including the local administration head who had sent his best divers, thought he had died because they had searched far and wide and could not find his body. Then suddenly he appears and states ‘there are no Hindus or Muslim's’, without so much as giving an explanation.
While there is no referenced historical proof of this event, and considered one of the many oral sakhi’s (‘witness to an event’ Sanskrit meaning), there are many who may not know the event or the importance of what he said.
For us this event and thought has been mulling in our consciousness for many months. And we know that the non-believers might agree to our line of thought, but not to the story, or that the believers will agree to the story but may not have had the time to reflect on the implication.
Nevertheless, we have to put the thoughts that have been churning in our MINDs' since time now.
Well, we strongly feel that he truly made the statement, “there are no Hindus or Muslims”, this also gets corroborated with another Sakhi about his death and funeral (but that will be another story).
However, neither did he say there are only Sikhs, so no one can or should take that reference.
But then why not, Jains, Christians, Jews, or Buddhists, he did not name any one of them either, well to my mind it's simple, that at that time he was mostly only dealing with Hindus and Muslims on a day to day basis.
And like any other enlightened (connected) soul, he never talked about creating new sects, but merely reminded us about the original universal truths that already existed and were very eloquently stated by many many other enlightened souls before him. And the proof of this is in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, which eloquently states the existence and reverence of every religion, the various names of God as know through many ages, and the acceptance of all four scriptures: Bible, Koran, Torah, & Avesta, and the four Vedas.
Now the answer to the question of what he means becomes very clear, that we do not become a Hindu or a Muslim by simply being born into that religion, we have to follow the doctrines of the founders, with love and honesty. Not be swayed by worldly boundaries or rituals.
Yes, we are born humans, boy or girl also does not matter, simple humans that are connected to the universe and yes possess a specific level of intelligence. However, what we become is what we truly practice.
And for those who accept that Nanak was a great man, a Guru, and a special connected soul, then let's at least get inspired by what he truly preached:
Recite the Name of God (whatever it be for ONE)
