On Our Radar: 4 Leadership Essentials During Culture Transformations

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Robert Reiss, host of “The CEO Show,” on his nationally syndicated radio program and podcast. In our far-ranging discussion, Robert asked about the mistakes that CEOs often make when transforming or building their organization’s culture.

At Blue Beyond, we feel that mistakes are just opportunities for learning, growth, and improvement. With that in mind, let me share four culture-building opportunities we consistently see in our work:

  1. Walk the Talk It is not enough for leaders to talk about the culture they want. They must integrate cultural aspirations into their daily life and model the behaviors they want.
  2. Take Time to Understand the Employee Experience Successful culture change doesn’t happen by edict. It has to be embraced by employees throughout the organization – which means you have to listen closely and build relationships with employees to truly understand their experience. Prioritize regular “ask-me-anything” conversations and informal opportunities to engage to unearth sentiments that go beyond survey feedback.
  3. Equip and Empower Leaders & Managers to Succeed Often organizations struggle with what we call the “say/do” gap. Goals are set, but training and tools to empower leaders and managers are often missing to guide implementation. Provide them with the training and tools they need to become culture builders.
  4. Embrace Authenticity and Vulnerability We all make mistakes – and often everyone knows when we do. When a leader owns up to mistakes or hurdles, employees feel they are a trusted part of a team. Never underestimate the power of empathy.
