Our Purpose In Life

Our Purpose In Life

Have you discovered your purpose in life?

During my last trip to Israel, I took a minute to step back and ask myself that very question.

King David’s purpose was to claim the Kingdom of Israel by founding the Judaean Dynasty and uniting all the tribes of Israel under a single monarch.

His purpose was discovered once it was realized that he possessed a powerful trait that King Saul lacked: a love and heart for G-d (which is why he ultimately became the new King of Israel).

So as I laid on the rocks of Nachal Aragout, with the blazing hot sun beating down on my face as I stared into the horizon… I think I finally figured out the answer.

My purpose in life is to make a significant impact on humanity through incubating, nurturing and scaling Entrepreneurial-based companies and supporting the Entrepreneurs that run them.

And if you remember, last week we talked about your moral compass and how we as Entrepreneurs must always refrain from putting it?up for sale.

That ties into this week’s topic because similar to your moral compass, Entrepreneurs should never lose sight of their purpose in life… Especially when things aren’t going as well (or as you originally planned) and you’re thinking about throwing in the towel.

If you can’t immediately recognize your life’s purpose, here are three follow-up questions I recommend asking yourself to make the discovery process easier:

  1. What are you most passionate about?

Oftentimes, our purpose in life can be directly correlated to our passions and what we love doing most every day.

Take any famous basketball player for example…

Everyone that steps foot into the NBA has one thing in common: At one time they loved to play the game of basketball both on and off the court.

People like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant didn’t become the best in their industry by dreading the sound of their 5 o'clock alarm…Rather, they had difficulty falling asleep the night prior because they couldn’t wait to get up in the morning and go to practice.

Many Entrepreneurs I talk to feel the exact same way about their businesses—including myself.

I can’t wait to hop out of bed every morning, meet with my team, and work together to help our clients grow and scale their businesses, reach their revenue and profit goals, and attain their ultimate visions.?

If that sounds like you, your life purpose may be to positively impact as many people as possible through the growth of your business.?

This leads me to my next question…

2. What Did Your 8-Year-Old Self Love Doing?

Ah, yes… the good ol’ days of being a kid—back when life was simple, and not as complicated and demanding as it is now as an adult.?

Think back to those early days of your life and try to remember what you loved to do when you had unlimited free time and ZERO responsibilities.

(I take that back… I remember being responsible for bringing 100 M&M’s on the 100th day of school in 3rd grade!)

Personally, what my 8-year-old self loved most was going to Florida on every vacation so I could go to work and “help” my grandfather grow his business.

Now that I think about it, at that age I don't know how much I was helping, but my grandfather told me I was…?

At least I was good at matching up all the Medicare and Medicaid forms and putting them in numerical order so they could be filed for payment.

I still smile thinking about all the memories made in my grandfather's Entrepreneurial business; he taught me all about hard work.

Although I’ve ‘somewhat’ grown up since, I still value that core principle my 8-year-old self lived by and continue to practice it to this day.

Take for example my trip to Israel…

I had the opportunity to spend LOTS of quality time with friends, and my family (my wife, my son, and my daughter). The memories we made together will never be forgotten.

And while we didn’t work hard, we played hard.?

From early mornings to late nights, we pushed ourselves to see all that we could while putting in a hike nearly every day.

And now that I think about it…

Entrepreneurship has positively influenced my ability to embark on such spontaneous adventures, which is partially why I (and probably you) decided to become an Entrepreneur in the first place…

FREEDOM! ??

Now, the final question you should ask yourself when discovering your life purpose is…

3. What are you naturally good at?

I believe everyone has a gift from G-d that they’ve naturally developed as a child and carried on into adulthood.

Some are naturally talented at playing the violin…while others excel in having strong interpersonal skills.

The action of starting a business around your gift from G-d seems to be a recurring theme among many Entrepreneurs.

For example, my team tells me that my gift from G-d is being an extraordinary leader. I will own this, but I personally feel my natural gift is ideating and solving challenges on the spot…?which I think is one of the reasons why I decided to start Business Nitrogen over 12 years ago, to help solve our client’s challenges so they can scale.

This quote from world-renowned television host Steve Harvey backs up that claim perfectly:

“I'm going to take this G-d-given gift of being funny, and I'm going to spread it out like peanut butter on everything I do.” — Steve Harvey

So, I want you to take a moment and ask yourself those three questions as you continue to discover your purpose in life.

Here they are again (so you don’t have to scroll back up):

  1. What are you most passionate about?

2. What did your 8-year-old self love doing?

3. What are you naturally good at?

I encourage you to use your answers as a token of remembrance to help kickstart your week!

To your success,?

David?
