Our Principles Will Never Be For Sale
Ian Johnson
Managing Director & Principal Consultant at CISLO Solutions Ltd. - Clarity from Chaos
Transitioning from being a Royal Marines Commando to civilian life is more than just a change of uniform; it's a journey from one high-performance, high-trust environment to another where these qualities are equally vital. The core principles instilled in us are not only timeless but also universally applicable, especially in the corporate world. These principles are not commodities; they are integral to who we are and how we operate. They are not for sale.
The Bedrock of Trust and Dependability
In the Royal Marines, trust isn't just encouraged; it's mandatory. When you're part of a team where lives depend on each member's actions, trust becomes second nature. This deep-seated reliability translates seamlessly into the workplace. Employers and teams can depend on us to deliver, often going above and beyond to ensure that objectives are met with precision and integrity.
But it's not just the Marines. Throughout my service (albeit a long time ago now), I had the privilege of working alongside members of other branches, be it the Army, Navy, Air Force, or our international allies. Time and again, I witnessed the same unwavering commitment to trust and dependability. These shared values are a common thread that binds all who serve.
Leadership Under Pressure
High-stress situations are a daily reality in the military. We are trained to make critical decisions under pressure. Skills that whilst they may not have the same consequences in business are just as valuable. Whether it's meeting tight deadlines or navigating complex projects, veterans bring a level of composure and strategic thinking that inspires confidence and drives results.
Commitment to Excellence
Vince Lombardi said, "Perfection is unattainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence." This mindset is ingrained in all service members. We strive for the highest standards in all we do, constantly seeking to improve and excel. This relentless pursuit of excellence is a significant asset in any professional setting, fostering innovation and continuous improvement.
Integrity Above All
Our principles are our compass. Integrity isn't just a buzzword; it's the essence of our conduct. In business, this translates to ethical decision-making and transparency. We uphold commitments, honour agreements, and conduct ourselves with honesty, even when no one is watching. This is a trait shared across all branches of the service, reflecting a universal code of honour.

Adaptability and Resilience
The ability to adapt quickly to changing situations is a hallmark of military training. In an era where industries evolve rapidly, adaptability is crucial. We not only embrace change but also leverage it to find new opportunities and solutions. Our resilience ensures that setbacks are temporary and serve as lessons rather than obstacles.
Teamwork Makes the Mission
In the military, we learn that the team's success is our success. This collaborative spirit is vital in any organization. We excel at working within diverse teams, understanding that combining different strengths leads to achieving common goals more effectively. Having worked with various services, I can attest that this ethos is universal among those who serve.
Why These Principles Matter in Business
Companies today face challenges that require more than just technical skills. They need leaders and team members who are trustworthy, reliable, and principled. The values we carry from our service, regardless of the branch, are precisely what organisations need to build strong, cohesive teams that can stand firm in the modern business landscape.
Carrying Forward Unwavering Principles
Our principles are not for sale because they are priceless. They define us and are the foundation upon which we build our professional lives after service. Whether as former Royal Marines Commandos or veterans from other esteemed branches, we bring a unique blend of trustworthiness, leadership, and an unyielding commitment to excellence. In a world where principles can sometimes be compromised, we stand firm, because that's who we are.
If you're looking for leaders and team members who embody these unwavering principles, consider the value that veterans bring to your organisation. Our commitment to excellence and integrity isn't just part of our past; it's the cornerstone of our future, and yours.

3 个月Love it Johnno. One big difference I’ve experienced between the military and civilian workforce is, in the military, the leadership hierarchy are forged from the same fire as those they lead. This gives them the edge on effectiveness. Like you, “Unselfishness”, “Courage”, “Determination”, and “Cheerfulness in the Face of Adversity” are ingrained in my DNA. Today regardless of background, “Curiosity”, “Empathy”, “Compassion”, “Courage”, “Kindness”, and “Integrity” are all non-negotiable leadership traits for me. If you don’t have those, you’re not a leader, you just think you are. Great write up. Love you like a brother.

3 个月Indeed you are right We were all military people in our family and I was very fortunate to meet with friends of in my younger days an interesting insight into WW2 where they rarely spoke about their experiences only humorously. It’s important people in business and industry give ex servicemen the opportunity to shine and show the qualities here described.
