Attention all bird lovers!!!
Over the past couple of months, some new guests have declared Riverstone Lodge as the place to be seen. It seems as if the tranquil surroundings, indigenous trees and the soothing sound of the Crocodile river, has drawn new bird life into our neighborhood.
The Masked Weaver and the Lesser Masked Weaver have been spotted building their nests in the swaying trees overhanging the water. It is a fallacy that these birds pick the leaves off branches surrounding the nests in order to prevent snakes from entering –snakes will enter leaves or no leaves! No, in the true style of many male species – the leaf stripping is to allow the male to be seen when hanging under the nest – why? To attract the female of course!
Gliding elegantly on the river and occasionally going ‘bottoms up’, the Yellow-billed Duck and the Red-billed Teal are perhaps the most noticeable birds at the river.
As RiverstoneLodge always strives to exceed our guests expectations, the next step will be to build some roosting nests for them.
Another happy guest is the Blacksmith Plover. These stylish black and white birds with long legs prepare their nests on the fringes of the river. Just to prove that the security at Riverstone Lodge is of the up-most importance – these birds patrol their territories in the morning of the breeding season – flying in small groups and calling out “All is well!”
Hiding in the cavities of trees, the timid Yellow-billed Hornbills can be heard chattering to each other.
We trust that soon, they will summon enough courage, and join our growing bird life at Riverstone Lodge on the banks of the Crocodile River.
