Trend Watch: Nokia’s 800 Gigabit Ethernet (800GE)
In each Newsletter, we examine a current trend or emerging technology that is shaping the future of the data center industry.
What: Nokia’s 800 Gigabit Ethernet Routing technology
Why: 1.6 Terabits per second with zero packet loss clears the way for massive data transfers between clouds, enabling the growth of AI and ML applications.
Earlier this year OpenColo completed the first commercial field trial of Nokia's 800 Gigabit Ethernet (800GE) routing technology, and the results were impressive.
The technology was able to aggregate two 800GE connections point to point in Silicon Valley at a blazing 1.6 Terabits per second. This is a significant industry watermark as most of the market is still using 400 GB/s connectivity. With the success of this field trial, we are excited to see what other advancements we can make in the future with Nokia's cutting-edge technology.

EGI, Scrappy Upstarts to Global Service Provider
EGI 's journey began as a provider of dedicated servers over two decades ago, quickly gaining a reputation for delivering high-quality services with a focus on reliability and flexibility. As the market shifted towards cloud-based services, EGI adapted to meet the changing needs of its customers.
“We were about as small as you can possibly be in that my husband built the first servers on our living room floor and then drove them down to Ashburn, Virginia.” - CEO Sally Simkiss
That was 2003. EGI entered the hosting market via the gaming niche with Counter-Strike servers. The company later added audio and video streaming to the mix of services provided. As hosting experts will tell you, both gamers and streamers take hardware performance uber seriously. So, exploring the idea of EGI owning bare-metal servers was a natural next step. Sally told us the founding team followed the same protocol with each new venture: buy what they could build on their own, and then grow.
EGI expanded its services suite to include solutions catering to startups at every stage of growth. By providing flexible infrastructure, advanced automation, and 24/7 support, EGI enabled startups to customize their environments, streamline processes, and manage costs effectively. EGI's services were designed to scale with startups, ensuring that they could continue to meet the evolving needs of their clients.
EGI's success has allowed them to expand their reach with partners globally. Its ability to establish a local presence and better serve international customers with its services is a testament to its commitment to meeting the needs of its customers.
Their success story is one of adapting to change, delivering high-quality services, and focusing on sustainability. By embracing innovation, and flexibility, and meeting the evolving needs of its customers, EGI has grown from a provider of dedicated servers to a leading provider of cloud-based services.
