How on earth are we really going to change our society and its views on domestic violence if we are not educating our children?
Education is knowledge and knowledge is POWER! We see so much in the news about domestic violence but very little educational materials. The informative ads that have been promoted on TV are very effective however only run for a short time, presumably because of the cost of advertising. So, again I ask - what and when are we going to start educating our kids about domestic family violence so that we can begin to see some change in years to come? The longer it takes, the longer it will be for change to happen.
I was under the impression that all students from prep to Yr 10 would be involved in a HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS program but yet see no evidence of it in Qld schools. DARE (Domestic Abuse Recovery and Education) has developed a program that is currently in its 3rd year of implementation, offered for FREE to all schools in the Sth East Qld region. In 2018, it's implementation will incur a small fee, unless it is funded by the State Education Department or others.
This program is designed to inform senior students about how to identify RED FLAGS in a relationship that should be a cause of concern. The nature of domestic family violence, types of abuse, the cycle and where to get help in Qld. We contrast abusive, controlling behaviour with what a healthy relationship should look like.
We cannot let next years adults (with some already being abused in grade 11), go out into the world without some form of education on what DFV actually is. It is our duty of care to our next leaders, our next generation, to educate them on how to be healthy, active, productive and respectful adults in society.
So WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
Please pass on this information to schools and leaders in the community so that they can take advantage of this FREE valuable offer in 2017.

7 年Taught at Caboolture High this morning. What a great response, including engagement from the year 12's. What is sad to see is the number of students who are experiencing this at home. Unfortunately there is a high rate of DV around this location and a larger number of students relate to the topic. It is not unusual for year 12's to be come emotionally affected after one of these sessions especially when they are the recipients of constant abuse at home. Lucky that we are blessed with so many caring teachers who follow up with these students to assist them in their future journey.
