Our journey has been about breaking boundaries and proving that culinary traditions can evolve!

Soul & Surf has been delighting the residents of Manchester with its wonderfully crafted Afro/American cuisine delicacies. The brand is all about giving people the opportunity to experience West African traditional food in a modern world and we were excited to catch up with them to find out more. Here is their interview – we hope you enjoy the read!

  1. Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind starting your business and the journey that led you to where you are today?

The inspiration behind starting our business was the fusion of West African and American soul food cuisines. What was initially a small endeavour born out of a passion for cooking soon became a revelation. We noticed a significant demand for this unique blend of flavours, and people were pleasantly surprised. Many would say, 'I didn't know you could have Jollof rice and lobster together,' highlighting the novelty of our offerings. The concept we embraced was clear: traditional West African food could be reimagined in a modern world, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Our journey has been about breaking boundaries and proving that culinary traditions can evolve, transcending cultural boundaries to create a delightful experience that's truly for everybody.

  1. What challenges have you faced as a black-owned business, and how have you overcome them?

In competitive markets, it can be quite a task to stand out. However, we've managed this challenge by focusing on our Unique Selling Proposition (USP), which revolves around our fusion of West African and American soul food cuisines. This unique culinary blend has helped us create a distinctive niche and attract a diverse customer base.

Furthermore, our ability to overcome obstacles is anchored in our resilience and determination. Acknowledging that setbacks are a natural part of the entrepreneurial journey, we've consistently shown adaptability and commitment to our vision.

  1. How does your business contribute to the celebration and preservation of Black history and culture?

As a restaurant inspired by Afro cuisine, we are proud of how we've crafted our menu, featuring the renowned Jollof Rice right here in the heart of Manchester. This endeavour serves as a means to introduce and celebrate African culture to the diverse community of Manchester.

Preserving and celebrating our rich culinary heritage is an ongoing accomplishment, and we are proud to serve as a hub for preserving and sharing our cultural traditions through food.

  1. Are there any significant milestones or accomplishments your business has achieved that you're particularly proud of?

One of our major achievements that we're truly proud of was being spotlighted by three of Manchester's most prominent food blogs. These features not only substantially expanded our social media presence but, more importantly, also attracted a significant increase in customers to our establishment.

  1. Who inspires you the most and why?

Our inspiration comes from various sources, but at its core, it's driven by the vibrant spirit of the Black community. We're inspired by the strength, creativity, and resilience displayed by Black individuals throughout history as they've surmounted numerous challenges and contributed significantly to culture, society, and the world.

Additionally, we draw inspiration from the warmth and support of our loyal customers and the communities we serve. Their enthusiasm and appreciation for our culinary offerings encourage us to keep innovating and exceeding expectations.

In essence, our inspiration stems from the rich tapestry of Black culture, the stories of those who've paved the way, and the daily interactions with the wonderful individuals who make up our community. This collective inspiration fuels our determination to create exceptional culinary experiences and make positive contributions to the world around us.

  1. What advice would you give young black entrepreneurs about how to be successful in business in the UK??

Above all else, the key is to pursue your passion! You must deeply love and understand your product or service. Your Unique Selling Point, which distinguishes you from the competition, is crucial. Embrace the learning curve and don't fear making mistakes; they are an inevitable part of the entrepreneurial journey.
