Call for Creation 2023

Call for Creation, the residency project for young choreographers promoted by Orsolina 28 Art Foundation continues to give voice to emerging talents.

In 2023 we received more than 1000 applications, which confirms the need to continue supporting young emerging artists.

After carefully reviewing each proposal, the artistic team decided to award residencies to two selected projects: Orsolina 28 was proud to support and give voice to their talent.

The nominated projects were:

Rachelle Anai?s Scott | Ethan Colangelo

The Memory of We

Rachelle Anai?s Scott

“I want to create a choreographic plot around the beauty and the lucidity of Memory. I want to be able to play with how memory can be affected and felt in the body. Most importantly, I want the viewer to be able to see memories through different lenses, and to find the sensitivity, the emotions and the nuances that run parallel to our own personal stories”. (Rachelle Ana?s Scott)

A trio based on a storyline that reflects a variety of diverse emotions and human complexities, playing with the passing of time and showcasing a series of personal stories in fragments and vignettes of specific memories. Through the form of motion and dance, the audience can see these memories played out through the lens of each character. However, what is fascinating about memory is that it can be easily skewed. It can be something that is distorted from actual reality, for it is always based on perspective, and with time, all memory is eventually warped. And it is this window of opportunity, where we tend to rewrite our story. With three dancers on the stage, Rachelle wants to be able to show how time can be fast forwarded, warped, rewound, and retold. And with a clear, theatrical and visceral choreographic exploration, she wants to play with memory and time, and its pull on humanity’s hopefulness.

On Blurred Edges

Ethan Colangelo

“As a creator and as a human I have found that the recent approach to conflicting ideologies has been one of polarization. On blurred edges researches the thought and possibility of how multiple ideas, beliefs and pure human emotions can exist simultaneously in the same space”. (Ethan Colangelo)

On blurred edges is the continuation of a choreographic idea that began during a residency at the 2022 Copenhagen International Choreography Competition. This work in progress started as a duet between current Ballet BC dancers Rae Srivastava and Sarah Pippin. Now the work continues with four to five artists to find a range of interactions and physicality beyond that of two individuals. The work dives into the idea of nuance inside difficult conversations surrounding the self, society, and relationships/love. In his work, Nathan will use references from A Little Life (the novel by Hanya Yanagihara) and Tar (the movie by Todd Field) as jumping off points and further inspiration, as they highly relate to the thematic ideas at hand. His goal is to research ways in which conflicting ideas and human interactions can be represented in a nuanced manner onstage. A challenge to express the idea of how as humans we can hold on to the integrity of our beliefs whilst also being surrounded with opposing ideologies coexisting.

Dancers: Toon Lobach, Joey Gertin, Kelis Robinson, Marisa Christogeorge, Ethan Colangelo
