This week, producer Sarah Storm spoke with Hello Monday listeners about surviving layoffs, and then got advice from Get Hired's Andrew Seaman .
Four layoff stories and the lessons we call can learn
If you’ve recently been laid off, see a possible layoff coming, or know someone who is affected, we made this episode especially for you. Our host this week is our producer, Sarah Storm. She and her husband have a good deal of personal experience from which to draw, and she speaks from authority when she describes the resilience that we cultivate when we move through layoffs. Sure, you know this. Maybe you've heard it. But how do you *do* it?
This week, you’ll hear other Hello Monday listeners talk about past layoff experiences - how it affected them, what they learned, and where they got to. Then, we present an in-depth conversation with Andrew Seaman, LinkedIn’s Managing Editor for Jobs and Career Development. In just over 30 minutes, we’ll offer some camaraderie and lots of practical and tactical tips on how to survive this period of your working life.
So what should you take away? Here are just a few of the things you'll hear:
SWETA REGMI on how it felt to lose her finance job: "Once I lost that title, once the title was taken away, I did not know who I was and I really had self doubt and very, very low confidence."

MARC MONDAY on what he learned: "The important thing is to take the stigma away and really understand that it's not about you. It's about the pace of change in the industry, in our economy, and it's going to happen."
NICOLE HOWARD on work friends: "One of the things I realized after being let go is there should be a time to grieve for losing your sense of community."
ROBBIE KELLMAN BAXTER on going into business for herself after a layoff: "I had a pretty low bar when I started. I said, 'You know, I just, I just want to hit this number every month.'"
After speaking to these Hello Monday listeners and others, Sarah called up Get Hired host Andrew Seaman to collect his advice on what to do when you are let go. The biggest surprise for me? He advised that you PAUSE. I'm just going to say that this is the opposite of what I would feel like doing if I had just lost my job. But he suggests that your future self will thank you for building in reflection time. Listen to the episode to learn why:
OFFICE HOURS: We're off this week as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving.
May Hello Monday's listeners find reasons to be grateful this week, and have the opportunity to share those reasons with friends and family! We'll be back next week with new ideas and conversations for you.

1 年Consider a sabbatical - making your time off intentional, and not looking for a job right away. Jessi Hempel and I's interview on sabbaticals here: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/transcript-e164-dj-didonna-jessi-hempel/ Definitely a privilege to do so, but many folks have the opportunity to make space for healing, spending time with family, or working on a personal project. Heck, many folks even got multi-month severance. If you can afford to do so, don't just jump right back into the frying pan - make space for an identity-shifting experience of a lifetime.

1 年Thank you for creating an episode centered around layoffs as unfortunately it is impacting so many people right now. I found it particularly encouraging to hear from people who experienced layoffs personally in the past and how they were able to move on to something new and the different stories shared that illustrated how that can look different for everyone. Andrew Seaman's 3 tips were fantastic. These tips are exactly what needs to be shared in the instance of a layoff or any career transition. When I transitioned careers last year, I had to pause and really evaluate what things were important to me and how I could find a career that would be in alignment with them. So the pause is particularly important in a strategic sense for preparing to reset and then asking yourself where you’d like to go and conducting the research on how to make it happen. I also really enjoyed the actionable steps such as embracing personal non-work related parts of your life, taking a strategic and balanced approach to discovering and applying for new opportunities as well as activating your network. Great recommendations! I wish the best for anyone who has been impacted by the layoffs. ?
