Our FareShare Partnership

Our FareShare Partnership

BBF has continued to work with FareShare over 2023 & 2024 and we are now one of their Leading Food Partners, helping to fight hunger and tackle food surplus.?

Part of our ESG strategy is to redistribute our food surplus where it is needed most, to minimise our impact on the environment. We do this in various ways:?

  • Redistributing food for human consumption whenever it is safe to do so.?
  • Putting the surplus back into the food chain with our animal feed partners, this reduces their reliance on fresh food and reduces emissions.?
  • Or, as a last resort, it will go to Anaerobic Digestion. This uses the waste to generate gases, that can be burnt for energy, which is then converted to electricity. The left over mulch is then used for fertilisers in place of fossil fuel derived options.?

Food Waste is responsible for around 10% of all global emissions and anything we can do to reduce that is really positive for our overall impact.?

So when we have surplus food our supply chain teams contact the FareShare representatives with the information of the product that is available. The product is then collected and distributed around the country by their own network and partners. Ensuring we avoid wasting any of our excellent cakes and the people who may not be able to afford some simple luxuries will be able to enjoy them! This not only supports reducing waste but helps our local communities as well. The cost-of-living crisis has meant these programmes are essential for a lot of people in society.?

These initiatives are part of our ESG Strategy that helps BBF to reduce our impact on the plant. Food Redistribution is a very small part of our output, in fact it is less than 0.2% of our overall production!?

Who are FareShare?

FareShare is the UK’s longest-running food redistribution charity, launched in 1994 - now 30 years old! They were born out of the belief that no good food should go to waste, especially when people are going hungry. This belief is as central to their work now, just as it was 30 years ago.

Look out for some events that will be happening across the country to raise awareness about the good work that they do.

FareShare Volunteers

Not only do FareShare distribute food, they also have various volunteering roles to help people gain experience for work, become more integrated into their communities, give back to society and to combat loneliness. Here is Mark's story:

Mark Adams, FareShare East of England Winner: Driver of the Year

A teacher in working life, Mark turned his hand to volunteering after discovering FareShare through his own community projects. Mark delivers food to charities all over East Anglia and sometimes also visits supermarkets or manufacturing sites to pick up food. Through being a driver, Mark has met all kinds of charities, from mosques and church groups to children’s centres and schools.
