Our commitment to a greener training industry

We are witnessing a shift in the pilot training industry from a traditional hub-and-spoke model to a more sustainable point-to-point model. This change is driven by the aviation industry’s increasing focus on sustainability and reducing carbon footprint. Avion is actively contributing to the shift by offering solutions that support airlines’ sustainability targets.

Shifting to a point-to-point model

The hub-and-spoke model, where passengers are routed through a central airport hub before reaching their destination, is not the most efficient travel method. This model often requires longer travel times, multiple connections, and more fuel consumption. On the other hand, the point-to-point model aims to provide a more direct route between two destinations, resulting in less fuel consumption, reduced emissions, and shorter travel times.

Pilot training must evolve to meet these new demands as we move towards a more sustainable aviation industry. Avion is committed to sustainably training pilots by incorporating the latest technologies and teaching methods that reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Transforming flight simulation technology

We are proud to share that Avion has successfully integrated all the necessary equipment into our A320 Full Flight Simulator while significantly reducing its weight. We have accomplished this by replacing heavy steel parts with light aluminium ones, resulting in our simulator weighing only 7.5 tons compared to the traditional 12-ton simulators.

The weight reduction has not only improved the efficiency and performance of our simulators but has also contributed to our sustainability efforts. Our calculations have shown that placing our simulators at airline home bases can reduce CO2 emissions by 514 tons annually. This is equivalent to the CO2 emitted by 21 aircraft on a single-way 1900km flight from Amsterdam-Schiphol (The Netherlands) to Malaga (Spain).??

In addition to reducing CO2 emissions, our simulators’ reduced weight has also led to a considerable decrease in power consumption. On average, our training devices consume up to 70% less energy than traditional simulators, resulting in significant savings on electrical bills. Based on a kWh price of € 0,70 (The Netherlands, October 2022), our customers can save almost €150.000 on their annual electrical bill using an Avion Full Flight Simulator.

Fly towards a greener future

At Avion, we are committed to creating a sustainable future for the aviation industry. Our efforts to reduce the simulators’ weight and power consumption are just one example of how we are making a difference.

We believe that sustainability is not just a responsibility but an opportunity to drive innovation and progress, and we will continue to invest in sustainable technologies and practices to ensure a better future for all.
