Our Commitment to the Community
Ward Hadaway Charity of the Year Initiative 2024

Our Commitment to the Community

At Ward Hadaway , giving back to the communities in which we live and work has always been, and will continue to be, a key priority for us. We're committed to improving lives through charitable donations, volunteering, undertaking trusteeships and pro-bono legal work.

We are incredibly proud of our contribution to the communities in which we operate. Through relationships with charities, community projects, sports clubs and through our own initiatives we are determined to play our role in creating better places to live, work and do business.

We selected two core themes to guide our decision-making process when selecting which charitable organisations to support:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Young People.

This includes many areas of support, such as providing opportunities for all, tackling food poverty, enabling change through sport and ending social isolation.

Community Engagement

Our Charity of the Year program is a cornerstone of our community engagement initiative, helping to focus our major fundraising efforts by supporting three specific charities based in the regions of each of our offices; Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle.

Our 2023/2024 Charity Partners:

We're proud to support the following organisations, each selected through a firm-wide vote and deeply connected to the hearts of our employees.

Charity of the Year Update - Part 1 of 3

In this 3-part article series, we'll introduce each of our Charity partners, shedding light on the admirable work they do to assist those in need, alongside the fundraising efforts we've undertaken and future plans to support their cause.

First up, is Martin House Children's Hospice

About Martin House

Martin House is a purpose-built hospice for children, young people and their families. They take referrals from the Yorkshire region and aim to support and care for families in which there is a child with a life-limiting condition. They do not charge families that use their services.

When Martin House first opened their doors to children and families in 1987, they were only the second children's hospice in the UK. Since then, they have played a leading role in the development of the philosophy and delivery of children's hospice care, not only in the UK, but throughout the world.

How has Ward Hadaway supported Martin House so far?

Lunch & Learn

We kicked off our fundraising year mid-2023 with a lunch & learn event, inviting a spokesperson from Martin House to explain the wonderful work they do and why fundraising initiatives such as this are so important, and help so many local Leeds families.

Leeds Office Summer BBQ

In the summer of '23, our Leeds office united for an evening of fundraising fun –from food and games to tombola and even soaking colleagues in the stocks! It was a fantastic kick-off to our charitable year, showcasing our team's spirit of giving back and making a difference in our community.

Golf Day

Our annual golf day proved immensely successful, raising over £1,300. An ambassador for Martin House was also in attendance to speak to our colleagues and guests about the wonderful work they undertake and the importance of bringing us all together that day to raise much needed funds.

Leap Year Games!

On the evening of the 29th February, our Leeds office departments participated in the 'Leap Year Games'. Each team paid an entry fee, with all proceeds benefiting Martin House. While fancy dress was optional, Olympic themed outfits were encouraged.

The corporate team emerged as champions, making it a memorable evening of team-building and fundraising for everyone involved.

5-a-side Football Tournament.

The Ward Hadaway team, (pictured below) entered the Martin House 5-a-side football tournament and against all odds, made it as far as the quarter finals!

Team Captain, Ben Waller said:

"After a slightly sub-optimal opening game (I'll say no more than that), we all grew into the tournament and were pleased to make it into the quarter finals (where we narrowly lost to a beauty of a long range shot in extra time). However, we were all absolutely drained by then, so a semi final would have finished us all off.?
"Thank you to Martin House for organising such a brilliant tournament, to all the teams who participated, and congratulations to the winners. Thank you also to anyone who has generously donated money to the cause."

Walk this May

To encourage everyone to prioritise their mental health and participate in fundraising, we're launching our own version of Walk this May - an initiative inspired by Living Streets.

We're encouraging everyone to take their lunchtime break away from their desks and embark on a one-mile walk.

For every 150 walks completed, the Firm will donate to our Charities of the Year.

We'll keep you updated of everyone's progress via LinkedIn updates.

Bake sales, sporting activities and more!

Our Leeds team still have a number of activities planned for the remainder of the fundraising year, including bake sales and fuddles, sporting activities and more.

We'll keep you updated of our progress via our LinkedIn page and let you know the grand total raised in the summer of 2024.
