Our Commitment to Black History Month
Sesh Coworking
An inclusive, female-centered work space to foster personal + professional growth, support + productivity & community.
Why is Black History Month in the shortest month of the year?
We aren't sure of that origin story, but what we are certain of is our commitment to amplifying and uplifting Black artists, business, sharing historically significant moments, resources and organizations working to uplift, amplify and lower barrier for the Black community.
What does being a amplifier mean?
By definition it's a piece of electronic equipment that increases the amplitude of signals. For example a loud speaker for a guitar, which in a sense is what we're trying to do.
Sesh wants to plug into the stories, art, businesses, and organizations owned and aimed at helping the Black community so we may turn up the frequency of those stories, driving the sound waves of Black voices deeper into our community.
In the month of February, we commit to using all of our social media platforms to amplify Black History Month, and only Black History Month.
Why is being an amplifier important?
Marginalized folks are not asked the same questions, showed the same concern, are not listened to, remembered, written into history books or believed when they tell their stories, think of the women abused by R.Kelly, how many women shared their stories before people believed.
Consider that people are funding legal attacks to seek out and target organizations like Fearless Fund over their "Strivers Grant, alleging it was "racially discriminatory" against non-Black business owners." (Source: https://www.npr.org/2024/09/11/nx-s1-5108729/fearless-fund-atlanta-grant-program-shut-down-lawsuit)
Or that in 2020, after the murder of George Floyd every major corporation started flaunting their DEI initiatives, only to about face a short four years later because these attacks on DEI not only faced well-intentioned organizations, but universities, like here in Texas, as well as governmental bodies, like the City of Houston.
These corporations are showing that they don't feel safe flaunting DEI while it is surrounded by toxic rhetoric and a legally hostile environment - the same environment our Black friends exist in every day.
As a coworking space that grounds itself in being a safe space for all, we want to make sure that the Black Community here in Houston feels seen, heard, listened to, and respected by not just us, but the larger community that surrounds our physical and digital location.
Another way that Sesh is an amplifier is via our Heritage Heroes series. If you would like to submit a story of your own for Heritage Heroes or have resources, voices, or organizations you want us to share, please email us at: [email protected] with the Title: Black History Month Resources -or- Heritage Heroes.
Editor's Note: Please note that some of our partners may produce content that is not amplification of Black History Month and they may tag us as a collaborator which will result in their post showing up in our feed. We kindly ask that if you see a post not regarding Black History Month know that may be from a partner who is also doing the hard, good work, but for another marginalized community.
